But if you focus too much on how far you have to go, each step will feel harder and harder.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treat Writing as a Business<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are serious about writing for a living, then you have to treat it like a business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that you need to look at money differently. Money is what will enable you to be a full-time writer, and therefore you need to earn more of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are multiple ways you can do this:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus on writing a lot of books\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop multiple streams of income\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecreativepenn.com\/2018\/11\/19\/how-to-scale-your-author-business-with-joseph-alexander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scale<\/a> your business <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be frugal with your money\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make good investments on things like book covers, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you learn to focus on the business side as well as the artistic side, you will find that they have more in common than you think.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think Like an Athlete<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I like to think about my writing the same way that an athlete thinks about their sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>An athlete knows that they need to practice hard<\/strong>, practice daily, and stay laser-focused on continuous improvement in order to be the best at what they do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, there is no Olympic sport for writing, but if there was, I would encourage you to go for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How would you change your writing process if you knew you could one day win a gold medal at an Olympic event?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, Olympic athletes didn&#8217;t get there overnight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took years of training, and that is one of the first mindset shifts I recommend to think like an athlete.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop the Habit of Showing Up\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of books out there talking about how to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kindlepreneur.com\/writing-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop habits<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by starting small.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>For writing, I recommend what I call the &#8220;habit of showing up.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Editor\u2019s note: This is one of my absolute favorite habits of mind and of action. ~Beth Barany]<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The habit of showing up is simple: just sit at your desk (or wherever you do your writing) and start writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>You don&#8217;t have to write for hours<\/strong>, especially when you&#8217;re just starting out. If all you do is sit for a minute, or write one sentence, that is enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning with this small habit will make it easier to be consistent every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have mastered that skill, you can increase the amount of time spent writing. You will be surprised at the <\/span><b>compounding effect <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of this one tiny habit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art is a Learned Skill<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, I want to talk about art. Most people think that art is something that just comes when the muse strikes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But this is not true.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picasso painted hundreds and hundreds of paintings before he was considered a master.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen King writes 2,000 words every single day, and has released dozens of books.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brandon Sanderson wrote 13 books before getting his first publishing contract.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Octavia Butler wrote everyday, no matter what.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sophie Littlefield sent out 100 query letters to literary agents before getting picked up with her 101st query.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meridel Lesueur kept writing even while she was blacklisted in the 1950s.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, art is something that comes with practice. The more practice that you have, the better you will be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Yes, it&#8217;s true that inspiration can strike<\/strong>.
