Sometimes we call it spring fever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April showers keep us inside. Focusing on our writing keeps us from moaning about the constant drizzle outside our windows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the month wanes, and those flowers start blooming, it gets harder and harder to focus on your story and ignore the beauty unfolding right outside your window.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s a writer to do?!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have some great thoughts about that, courtesy of the Farnam Street<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0blog\u2019s Sunday newsletter,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/fs.blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brain Food<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The article<\/strong>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fs.blog\/the-history-of-cognitive-overload\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The History of Cognitive Overload<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is based on a book by Daniel Levitin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/u\/38eRzB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Organized Mind: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I found myself fascinated by the concept of cognitive overload and how it affects our ability to stay focused on the things that really matter to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I learned a few amazing facts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The human brain can only process about 120 bits per second.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We require 60 bits per second to carry on a conversation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking leaves us tired because it uses oxygen and glucose in our brains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of productivity and loss of drive can result from overload,<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, Shane Parrish\u2019s thoughts are generalized, not focused on the unique challenges writers face nearly every time they sit down to write.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Emails, well-meaning family members<\/strong>, phone calls, and worst of all, the dreaded twins &#8212; click-bait and social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did, however, glean an important behavioral change after reading the admittedly long article.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I must prioritize my writing if I want to get it done.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips to Help You Focus\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, here at Writer\u2019s Fun Zone, we have some amazing authors who have offered their own ideas on how to deepen your focus on your craft this month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If you haven\u2019t read these<\/strong>, I encourage you to check them out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LA Bourgeois discusses using copy-work to strengthen your craft and deepen your connection to your work in her article <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2022\/04\/15\/your-masters-words-using-copywork-to-strengthen-your-craft-by-la-bourgeois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Your Masters\u2019 Words: Using Copywork to Strengthen Your Craft<\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelley Way taught us how to legally use a trademark in our books in her article, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2022\/04\/05\/can-i-use-a-trademark-in-my-book-by-kelley-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I Use a Trademark in my Book?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her advice will free up some brain space so you can focus on other, possibly more important, things.\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catharine Bramkamp offered her thoughts on how to deliver your message through your writing without beating your reader over the head with it.
