One of my hobbies is astronomy.<\/strong> I gobble up videos about planets, stars, the universe, and pretty much anything outside Earth\u2019s atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Christmas day, 2021, I got up early just to watch the James Webb Telescope launch live.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of my hobby<\/strong> — <\/span>read obsession<\/span><\/i> — I run into Carl Sagan, a lot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The above quote by the \u201castronomer of the people\u201d instantly lit up my brain and created a new one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAuthors are made of readers. We are a way for humanity to know itself.\u201d — Ann Woodford<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s so true<\/strong> — it sends chills down my spine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Writers are Readers<\/span><\/h2>\n

How many times have you heard, or been told, \u201cYou can\u2019t write if you don\u2019t read\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n

Authors, most anyway<\/strong>, are first and foremost readers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of us started our journey because we read something that inspired us, sparked our imagination, and set us down a path to being a writer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It might have happened when you were four or when you were forty-four<\/strong>, but it was likely a story that made you think, \u201cI have a story to tell too!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For me, that happened well into my forties and started as fanfiction before I realized I could create my own worlds and characters just as easily. Almost ten years later I have one book published and I\u2019m working on the next.<\/span><\/p>\n

Art Imitates Life: Life Imitates Art\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

We see life reflected in the reality of the worlds we read. Or sometimes in the lack of that reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, okay, many times<\/strong>, when I\u2019m reading something I\u2019m forced to look at how we connect to each other by the way different races connect in the SciFi stories I read.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some authors see the future so clearly, it\u2019s terrifying. Have you read <\/span>The Stand<\/span><\/i> by Stephen King<\/span><\/a>? <\/span>1984<\/span><\/i> by George Orwell<\/span><\/a>?<\/span> Or Brave New World <\/span><\/i>by Aldous Huxley<\/span><\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course<\/strong>, none came true exactly as the author wrote them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thank goodness!!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

But they have eerie similarities to our modern world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the same way<\/strong>, authors have often used stories as a way to make us see something that\u2019s wrong with society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a friend who insists <\/span>A Tale of Two Cities<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>is a parody of the French<\/span><\/p>\n

Revolution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What about <\/span>Lord of the Flies<\/span><\/i> by William Golding<\/span><\/a>? Or <\/span>Fahrenheit 451 <\/span><\/i>by Ray Bradbury<\/span><\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n

In many of these cases<\/strong>, the commentary is political and not only reflects the authors\u2019 feelings about the current status of the society they are living in but also where they fear we are going.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even In Romance<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of my favorite genres is alien romance, which invariably starts with human women being kidnapped from earth and sold into slavery. (Have no fear, they are — almost — always rescued by a gorgeous alien man who instantly falls in love with them.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The themes I run across that are slipped in amongst the rescuing and the love really make me think.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many reflect the unfairness of slavery and elements of racism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Surprisingly, one of them made a comment on our human condition, asking the heroine if humanity was ready for a tool that could bring both incredible healing and great destruction in the wrong hands when humans still fought over who owned what land. (<\/span>Cyborg Seduction: Interstellar Brides Program: The Colony<\/span><\/i><\/a> by Grace Goodwin)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I do think certain genres lend themselves to this sort of social commentary.<\/strong> Science fiction and fantasy are much better tools to draw a picture of society than say regency romance or historical fiction. Those might be a little more difficult. Though it is still possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe that any work of fiction is a window into the author\/creator\u2019s worldview.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course,<\/strong> not every book you read is going to be a treatise on how awful our past was or how dystopian our future will be. And you shouldn\u2019t feel obligated to include these themes in your work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But chances are if you\u2019re an author, you\u2019re probably writing about the world around you, whether you mean to or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
