We\u2019ve all heard the saying, \u201cWrite what you know.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But how many of us have solved a real-life murder mystery? Or flown a spaceship through a wormhole? Or conducted a whirlwind romance with a royal?<\/span><\/p>\n

And how many of us believe that our favorite authors have experienced the things they write about?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stephen King wrote The Stand<\/i><\/strong> decades before this pandemic rolled across the country.<\/strong> How many mysteries do you think Heather Graham has solved with the assistance of a ghost?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m 10000% sure that Madeleine L\u2019Engle never traveled through space and time to rescue her father.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, how can we do what they do?<\/span><\/h2>\n

How do we write the stories our hearts tell us to write without having the experience behind us? How do we make our stories feel as real as theirs?<\/span><\/p>\n

In the book, <\/strong>Madeleine L\u2019Engle: Herself<\/span><\/i>, Ms. L\u2019Engle talks about writing fantasy with this recommendation:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBefore you take your flights of fantasy, before you explain what a tesseract is, you have to make the reader comfortable in something homely, as the English use the word homely, which is more homey than homely.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

This recommendation isn\u2019t just for fantasy.<\/strong> It works for every story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting your reader into the story<\/span><\/h2>\n

Before you can convince your readers to go on this marvelous journey through the world you\u2019ve created, whether it be a planet on the other side of the galaxy or a bookshop down the road, you must make your reader comfortable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To do this,<\/strong> the reader needs to feel the solid earth of your world under their feet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the simplest ways to help your reader find that solid ground is by putting them into a space that is so, well, \u201cNormal\u201d that it resonates in their body.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this exercise,<\/strong> look at your life. Pick an activity that is so natural you take it for granted. Something you\u2019d usually ignore except for this exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you pet your dog on the head before you leave for work?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe make a cup of tea after dinner?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps you rub lotion into your hands whenever you feel nervous.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you have the action in your mind<\/strong>, write the scene. Describe the moment and your actions, what you feel, smell, hear, taste, see. Show us what is happening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Give us the <\/span>benefit<\/span><\/i> of your experience. Help us <\/span>feel<\/span><\/i> the concrete reality of that point in time.<\/span><\/p>\n

With this practice completed on yourself<\/strong>, use your experience to write out the same sort of occurrence for your protagonist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How do they interact with their pet or commute to work or make their lunch?<\/span><\/p>\n

How do they make their coffee (or version of coffee)?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What do they do to prepare for bed?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you place your reader in that mundane moment<\/strong>, you allow them to resonate with your characters, to identify with them, to feel like they are a part of that world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You give them solid ground to walk beside your characters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From that point, they will travel with you into the unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n
