Riley<\/a> as she shares with us \u201cWrite The Story As You Want To, Not How Others Tell You To Write It.\u201d Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a significant difference between non-fiction and fiction writing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One is where the story is true to life while the other is, well, you guessed it, not true at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Non-fiction is usually fact-checked<\/strong> &#8212; to ensure there are no embellishments or statements that could come out as untrue later on in the author\u2019s writing career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas, fiction writing can have as many fantasies as possible &#8212; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fictitious dates, cities, landmarks &#8212;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and that won\u2019t get the author in any hot water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Does it Matter\u2026?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why does it matter when writing fiction, we have to make our story seem more real in areas that don\u2019t really matter?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do some think that it\u2019s not realistic that a man would drink wine rather than cognac?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who says men don\u2019t roll their eyes when they are annoyed?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Or that men don\u2019t embrace each other unless somehow they are lovers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The above questions are what I gave to another who was reading my first novel.<\/strong> I didn\u2019t quite understand her criticism of why a man wouldn\u2019t roll their eyes when something said made them annoyed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their response was, \u201cMen don\u2019t do this at all.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This baffled me because I would see my husband roll his eyes at me whenever I would say something silly or do something out of the ordinary. Along with this eye roll, he would shake his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Then this person tried to tell me I needed to get to know men more<\/strong>, to know their traits, body language, and habits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wow, I\u2019ve worked with nothing but men in the past, and I\u2019ve been married to my husband for 17 years. I\u2019ve based my lead male characters after him and other male characters from those I\u2019d worked with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting to know the opposite sex and seeing what each one has\/had done in my presence, I would say gave me enough experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What made this person an expert on how men behaved or what they did?<\/strong> Their response was growing up with a lot of brothers and male cousins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact they grew up around these individuals only suggests they knew these individuals personally\u2014they didn\u2019t know every man on the face of the earth, nor wasn\u2019t a man themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story I was writing was indeed fiction.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I wanted to make my guy drink wine instead of cognac, I had every right to do so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one should tell a person who is writing fantasy that their dragon can\u2019t talk or become friends with the protagonist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s fantasy, why wouldn\u2019t they?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then what does it matter if a man rolls his eyes? If that\u2019s what the author wants in their story, they can.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s. Their. Story.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I get this person who was giving me all of this advice wrote their own story their own way<\/strong>. It didn\u2019t give them the right to tell me how to write my story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My story, like theirs, or any gifted author came directly from my heart. I let my creativity come into play and created three great novels from it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take A Stand For Yourself\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undoubtedly, this person\u2019s words of advice nearly caused me to give up on my dream, but I took a stand and cut ties with them and continued on writing. Their words\u2014whether they meant them to\u2014were hurtful and full of much discouragement rather than help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a self-indie author, you write a story of which you are proud of.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, when you send for others to review your work, you will receive feedback that will make your manuscript better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Receiving good advice will make you this much stronger as a writer<\/strong>\u2014the bad advice will only weaken you to the point you give up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t let this happen.
