Congratulations!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now what?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>At this point, you\u2019ve probably decided to get your book published<\/strong>, either by doing the work yourself and self-publishing, going traditional, or picking a hybrid option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before you can publish a book yourself, or send it to an agent\/editor, it needs some preparation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>And that\u2019s what I\u2019ll be covering today<\/strong>, three essential tools to get a book polished and ready to present to your audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dive in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Traditionally Published Authors: Microsoft Word\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are planning to send your book to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/23\/selling-book-agents-publishers-making-sure-recognize-name-query-hits-inbox-raimey-gallant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agent or a publisher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it needs to be presentable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of editors have a specific format that they\u2019re looking for when sorting through manuscripts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>You\u2019ll want to look up the exact specifications for the publisher you\u2019re working with<\/strong>, but in general it looks something like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black, 12 point, Times New Roman font<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 inch margins on all sides<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Left justified<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A single space after all periods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Double spaced<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.5\u201d indent on paragraphs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of page breaks at the end of chapters<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If that seems like a lot of work, don\u2019t worry.<\/strong> This is why I recommend Microsoft Word as the leading tool for authors looking to format a manuscript for submission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Word is the premiere tool for organizing and writing large manuscripts. It isn\u2019t a tool necessarily meant for authors (which is why I recommend another tool for self-published authors below), but it\u2019s perfect for handling all of the recommendations listed above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can learn more about Microsoft Word <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/word\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Self-published Authors: Atticus\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if you\u2019re planning to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/17\/the-myths-of-self-publishing-by-janelle-riley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-publish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one tool that you will need is a way to format your book for direct publication. This means you need something that can help you produce an attractive ebook file, as well as a PDF to use for print copies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Formatting a book without the right tool can be tedious<\/strong>, and I definitely don\u2019t recommend Microsoft Word for it. There is a program called Vellum that will do this, but it\u2019s expensive and only works on Mac.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, I recommend Atticus, which is a newer program that costs almost half of what Vellum and works on all platforms. It handles all of the formatting concerns, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizing front and back matter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting margins and bleeds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Producing headers, footers, and page numbers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing widows and orphans<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formatting for the appropriate trim size<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating chapter pages<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Once you run your book through Atticus<\/strong>, it will be beautifully formatted and ready to present directly to your readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can learn more about Atticus <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atticus.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For All: ProWritingAid\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, I\u2019ve only talked about tools that will help you format a manuscript or a book. But that\u2019s just one step in prepping it for publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, I always recommend that you invest in an <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2019\/07\/15\/how-to-spot-a-professional-editor-questions-to-ask-your-editor-before-hiring-by-mary-neighbour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">editor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a proofreader to help you out. But beyond that, a good tool to use is ProWritingAid, a software that will check your grammar, and also helps train your use of language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProWritingAid is a lot more than a fancy grammar checker, it will help you identify the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grammar\/spelling mistakes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Word choice improvements (such as identifying commonly repeated words)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clunky or run-on sentence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistency of tense<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Readability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passive voice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duplicate words or phrases<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also integrates with most writing software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>ProWritingAid is my top choice for general editing software<\/strong>, whether you go for independent or traditional publishing.
