Instead of definitive answers<\/strong>, look for better questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I was working as a realtor, I also took up yoga to relieve the stress of my job. I was most certainly a yoga beginner, and during one difficult position I had accomplished little more than an awkward turtling on my mat.<\/span><\/p>\n

The instructor loomed over me and abruptly asked again what I earned my Master\u2019s in. I told her<\/strong>. Creative writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen,\u201d she asked, \u201cwhat the hell are you doing in real estate?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Good question. Very good question.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Do I Mean by \u201cBetter\u201d Questions?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

Can you remember a time when a friend, mentor, or coach asked you such a good question that it instantly brought all your confusion, as well as all your big existential questions, into focus? <\/span><\/p>\n

Where, all of a sudden your energy was unstuck, and you were brimming with possible answers and solutions?<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the magic we\u2019re talking about here!<\/strong><\/p>\n

In our society, we have been raised to believe that the person with the most answers deserves the expert crown and should be worshipped accordingly. Which is not the case.<\/span><\/p>\n

The longer I work with female experts and writers<\/strong>, the more clearly I see that adventures and expertise based on the feminine, rather than masculine, journey does not sound like pat, easy answers.<\/span><\/p>\n

What it does sound like is insightful, intuitive questions<\/strong>. (Admittedly, \u201cWhat the hell are you doing?\u201d is a rather more direct question than a gentle intuitive nudge.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Expertise and its partner, wisdom<\/strong>, often manifest through very good questions, and very good questions are the result of quickly analyzing variables, meanings, and nuance, then asking the right thing. That is the way of the goddess, the queen, and\u2014very likely\u2014you.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Do You Ask Better Questions?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

Start with the answers. Write out the answers, as well as the desired outcomes, then frame them all as questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why are we doing X?<\/strong> What if we didn\u2019t do Y? You get the idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your subconscious, that handy, hidden, difficult-to-access part of your brain\u2014and some would argue, soul\u2014can answer questions. It <\/span>loves<\/span><\/i> to answer questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

As you can imagine<\/strong>, the better the questions, the more specific the answers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do not ask self-defeating questions:
\n<\/span>\u201cWhy am I so stupid?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cWhy don\u2019t I do this well?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cWhy doesn\u2019t he\/she love me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, ask more positive and generative questions:
\n<\/span>\u201cWhat can I give to the world?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cWhat is my mission?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cWhat do my readers need from me?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Go big.<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n

Expand your questions to bigger ideas so you get bigger answers in return.<\/span><\/p>\n

The true expert recognizes the gaps in a typical solution<\/strong>. An expert does not deliver the answers as she sees it, but rather, she asks better questions so her audience can answer for themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Do You Need to Ask Better Questions?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

Mastering questions is a superpower.<\/span><\/h3>\n

In any book genre from business to fantasy novel<\/strong>, anticipate the reader\u2019s questions, and answer them as the plot or instructions move through the pages.<\/span><\/p>\n

You will blow your readers away by answering the questions that they needed to ask all along but didn\u2019t know how to form the query.<\/span><\/p>\n

We naturally ask questions. <\/span><\/h3>\n

Your goal as a writer is to refine and discover ways and approaches to master the art of better questions that surprise and reveal.<\/span><\/p>\n

I wrapped up real estate and discovered I was a very good writing coach.<\/strong> I found my niche and have been thrilled to work with that part of my expertise for the last ten years. All thanks to a very good, very abrupt question.<\/span><\/p>\n
