Writers, how do you explore and develop your characters?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I first started writing fiction, I would interview them on paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

I would ask them juicy questions<\/strong>, like <\/span>what really pisses you off? <\/span><\/i>Then I\u2019d inhabit their psyches as best as I could and answer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once I got the feel for the cadence and tenor of their voice, they wouldn\u2019t shut up. They loved to rant, rave, pontificate, and reveal their deepest darkest secrets.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the process of revising my comedic novel in progress<\/strong>, I wrote a few point-counterpoint blog posts for my <\/span>Medium<\/span><\/a> publication <\/span>Humor! Authenticity! Magic!<\/span><\/i><\/a> in that style.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, my main character, Pastor Sterling, believes in answering teenagers’ sex questions. His abstinence-promoting wife, Wendy, does not.<\/span><\/p>\n

So when<\/span> Ninja Writers<\/span><\/a> founder, <\/span>Shaunta Grimes<\/span><\/a>, announced the BYOB (Blog Your Own Book) Challenge last June, I was primed!<\/span><\/p>\n

Her idea was to post daily on Medium<\/strong>, with an eye towards creating an ebook from the results. By the way, they\u2019re running the challenge again <\/span>right now<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t sure about a book at that point. I just relished writing posts as my main characters. Since the story takes place in a church community, I planned rotating blogs as <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>Jesus the Lamb<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/i> church\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each week<\/strong>, these characters would tackle different issues affecting them and their community. Issues in the novel itself, such as abortion, teen sex, and the right to die.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike real life, the teens got a solid platform to give adults what for. Unlike real life, the wife gets to call out her husband\u2019s mistress, and the mistress gets to fight back\u2014all on a church blog! It was a hoot and a half!<\/span><\/p>\n

Using a Blog to Learn<\/b><\/h2>\n

Every Saturday, I did a post about my process: what I was learning, the nuggets mined, and how I\u2019d use them in my revisions. These ended up being about character voice, subtext, soapboxes, and emotional triangles. Such fun!<\/span><\/p>\n

But a book?<\/strong> I was thinking along the lines of a PDF I could use as an opt-in for my email list.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every writer has an email list, right?<\/span><\/p>\n

I did not<\/strong>. So I <\/span>carpe diem<\/span><\/i>-ed just in time to have calls to action linked to a landing page of my freebie opt-in on every one of these August posts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because if folks enjoyed reading them half as much as I enjoyed writing them, they\u2019d want to know when the novel, <\/span>Man Pregnant!<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> comes out, right?<\/span><\/p>\n

Around that time<\/strong>, Shaunt launched the Ninja Writers Press with her vision for a series of writer’s guides on topics like grammar, punctuation, genre, and character development.<\/span><\/p>\n

Using a Blog for Character Development? Bingo!\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

My query was accepted, as well as my subsequent proposal. I got to learn SEO, market research, and how to create an outline and sample chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once my proposal was accepted<\/strong>, I was assigned a project manager from the Ninja team. She helped me get over technical hurdles, like keywords and Amazon categories.\u00a0Phew!<\/span><\/p>\n

We assembled <\/span>Creative Blogging: Ninja Writers Guide to Character Development<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0with chapters on subtext and emotional triangles. Basic explanations introduce relevant character blogs illustrating the themes. My annotations highlight the gems unearthed and their use in my novel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Letting Go of My Baby\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

Selling the book means I\u2019m the author, not the publisher. That would be Ninja Writers Press.<\/span><\/p>\n

While I was free to offer input<\/strong>, some decisions were out of my hands. The title and cover were designed with the entire series in mind, as well as SEO data. Selling a book to a publisher involves a bit of surrender in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n

I chose to be someone easy to work with, recognizing where I was the expert (my content) and where I was not (SEO and publishing). This paid off well, not just in earnings, but in terms of the writing professional I\u2019m becoming.<\/span><\/p>\n

My ebook launched on August first.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Exactly a year from the first blog post of the challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to Shaunta\u2019s huge email list<\/strong>, word got out.<\/span> We publicized it through various classes, workshops, and writers clubs. Much to my surprise and delight, we sold 96 copies the first day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Creative Blogging <\/span><\/i>ranked as the number one bestseller in three categories: <\/span>authorship<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>writing skill reference (Kindle Store)<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>two-hour education & reference short reads<\/span><\/a>! We\u2019ve gotten four reviews, all 5 stars.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a whirlwind week of marketing<\/strong>, promoting, and launching my street team.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once I catch my breath, it\u2019s back to editing <\/span>Man Pregnant! <\/span><\/i>and publishing my next ebook,<\/span> Bucket Listers, Get Your Brave On: How to do the Thing You\u2019re Too Old and Scared to Do<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n
