After all, getting lost in creating new worlds inhabited by new people (or unusual aliens) is what inspires me to write!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Descriptive Writing?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its purest definition, descriptive writing is describing a person, place, or thing in such a way that a picture forms in the reader\u2019s mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24462 aligncenter\" title=\"Descriptive WC\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Descriptive-WC.jpg\" alt=\"Descriptive WC\" width=\"173\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Descriptive-WC.jpg 555w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Descriptive-WC-260x300.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Descriptive writing involves pay<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>ing close attention to the details<\/strong>, using all five senses and the following techniques:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analogies, similes, and metaphors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Precise language using specific adjectives, nouns, and strong action verbs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being organized. This may include elements like chronology (time), location, and order of importance.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When describing a person, it includes a physical description along with how the person thinks, feels, and acts.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dive deeper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dive-in.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-24459\" title=\"dive in\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dive-in.png\" alt=\"dive in\" width=\"100\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dive-in.png 320w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dive-in-150x300.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Incorporate Descriptive Writing\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Describing helps the reader clearly imagine places, characters, and objects, and there are many ways to do this:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Almighty Adjective<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best ways to get the most out of an adjective is to look up the word origins to get a clearer idea if it\u2019s the right word to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If you\u2019re trying to describe an \u201coxymoron\u201d<\/strong>, the word originates from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mid-17th century from Greek\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxum\u014dron<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> neuter (used as a noun) of\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxum\u014dros<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointedly f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oolish\u2019,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">se Words that Describe More than Appearance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An old building could be a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ramshackle <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old building. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person could be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vivacious and sprightly<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead of young. Avoid just using physical aspects (i.e. eye color) by themselves. Add a sprinkling of \u201cgentle\u201d or \u201cpiercing\u201d to eyes that are \u201cmore green than blue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: \u201cHis all-black coat glistens in the late afternoon sun. His face displays a strong confidence with his nostrils flared, his veins bulging from his cheekbones, and his fiery black eyes burning holes into the souls of those who stare into them.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamell Wilson, 2005\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Describing a Place, Start With the First Thing That Strikes You about It\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about what you would notice first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>On a building do you first notice a sign?<\/strong> a window? or the material it was built with? Consider focusing on an attribute you\u2019d be elaborating later in the story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t that the building was tall, it was. It shot straight from the ground into the clouds and seemed to go for miles.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/lightbulb.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-24460\" title=\"lightbulb\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/lightbulb.png\" alt=\"lightbulb\" width=\"189\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/lightbulb.png 606w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/lightbulb-284x300.png 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make the Readers Feel What It\u2019s Like to Be in the Place<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add sensory details to appeal to your sense of smell, touch, or hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Examples:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe lightbulb threw off a blaze so bright it was almost violet.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe bag crinkled sharply when opened.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe wood of the tree was biting and rough enough that it scratched her hand when she brushed against it.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe spaghetti was so garlicky and salty he gulped a whole glass of soda after one bite.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Character Point of View (POV) to Filter Descriptions\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the POV of my character is one of my favorite ways to describe another person or place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An introverted character would describe the noise and action at a party much differently than an extrovert would.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If you have multiple points of view in your story<\/strong>, you might show the scene from their different viewpoints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you filter the description through a character POV, it\u2019s a way for the reader to feel and think about what that character does. Using this subtle way to describe their personalities helps make your characters real.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/The-secret-history.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-24461\" title=\"The secret history\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/The-secret-history.jpg\" alt=\"The secret history\" width=\"131\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/The-secret-history.jpg 327w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/The-secret-history-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 131px) 100vw, 131px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Donna Tartt in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/YRlw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secret History<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">describes her character Bunny (Edmund) Corcoran like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe wore the same jacket every day, a shapeless brown tweed that was frayed at the elbows and short in the sleeves, and his sandy hair was parted on the left, so a long forelock fell over one bespectacled eye.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The description of this man\u2019s clothes is a precursor to his character<\/strong>. Further on in the story, we learn Bunny has a \u201chonking\u201d voice who is invasive and unreflective. Given these clues throughout the story, it deepens what the reader expects from the character.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a Rich Vocabulary of Words Handy for Your Descriptions\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the easiest ways to categorize your characters is to divide them into the four simple types:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanguine: Bubbly\/animated\/emotional<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melancholic: Gloomy\/dispirited\/miserable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phlegmatic: Calm\/steadfast\/gentle<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choleric: Reactive\/outspoken\/angers easily<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if your heroine has a sanguine personality, she won\u2019t dress all in black and frown at people. She might love the color yellow, bounce when she should stand still, and speak rapidly, so she\u2019s hard to understand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You get the idea.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A favorite tool of mine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/4GQG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Emotion Thesaurus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (second edition)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was giddy with joy when they came out with the second edition.
