Okay. So the first thing you need to know about me is that I am the worst<\/i><\/strong>.<\/strong> I will <\/span>not <\/span><\/i>do something just because I know it\u2019s something that I <\/span>should<\/span><\/i>\u00a0do. Seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if I think it\u2019s the best thing in the world, resistance will poke out its ugly head and send me fleeing like a teenager stumbling away from a serial killer in a horror film.<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to get myself to do anything<\/strong>, I have to trick myself into it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Fire<\/a>Therefore, when I found <\/span>Fire Up Your Writing Brain<\/span><\/i><\/a> by Susan Reynolds, I nearly broke my finger adding it to my cart.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its promise of \u201chow to use proven neuroscience to become a more creative, productive, and successful writer\u201d seduced me. Could she help me trick myself more efficiently? Perhaps she knew a way around the resistance I\u2019d been experiencing. I had to know.<\/span><\/p>\n

This book fulfills that promise.<\/strong> Reynolds shepherds you through the writing process, from preparation to final edits.<\/span><\/p>\n

During that process, she doles out tips, creative exercises, and little tricks based in neuroscience to keep you writing. Each chapter ends with an exercise to \u201ctrain your writing brain\u201d and a series of inspirational quotes from famous authors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of my favorite parts shows up in Chapter 3<\/strong>, where she spends time assisting you in figuring out what kind of writing brain you have.<\/span><\/p>\n

Expanding from the idea of Plotter and Pantser, she helps you explore other definitions including Fox or Hedgehog, Basher or Swooper, Macro or Micro, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Exploring these options helps the writer see that they don\u2019t have to be just one or the other.<\/strong> They are themselves. As a writer who hates to be labeled, this chapter entranced me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, this book takes <\/span>forever<\/span><\/i> to read because it\u2019s so packed with information, and the writing resembles words found in a textbook rather than an engaging non-fiction read. About ten minutes into each session of reading, I began nodding off.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s great information to be digested on every single page<\/strong>, but I found it overwhelming and also a little bit boring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the techniques in this book would be useful to any artist, Reynolds successfully frames and directs the work toward us writers. And, if your writing craft bookshelf needs some support, the appendix includes a list of both classic and newer texts that can fill in any of your gaps.<\/span><\/p>\n

To successfully use this book<\/strong>, I recommend skimming it and then installing it on your writing desk within handy grabbing distance.<\/span><\/p>\n

As you find yourself hitting those points of resistance in your writing process, pick it up and read through the pages that cover your specific situation. You\u2019ll find strategies and systems to improve your writing and keep you on track to finish your project.<\/span><\/p>\n
