One of my favorite ways to find new readers<\/strong> and interact with those who already know me is a Facebook takeover of a group for readers.<\/span><\/p>\n

A takeover is where you run a Facebook group or event for anywhere from a few hours to a whole week at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a lovely way to introduce readers to my latest release<\/strong> while at the same time getting to know my readership better. Best of all? It\u2019s free to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what goes into a Facebook group takeover? Glad you asked!<\/span><\/p>\n

Find the Appropriate Group to Takeover for Your Genre<\/span><\/h2>\n

No matter what genre you write, there is at least one Facebook group full of readers anxious to discover your books. Reach out to the moderators of those groups and see if you can spend a day with their readers. Most groups welcome authors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example,<\/strong> I write inspirational romance. Along with Harlequin, my publisher, two of the groups I often visit are: <\/span>Love Inspired Authors and Readers Group<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Christian Romance Readers Gathering<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plan Your Takeover Posts\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I usually write my posts and prepare graphics on Canva in a Word document prior to the day(s) I\u2019ll be interacting with the group. Posts include a blurb or video of my newest release, but books are only part of the equation.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve found readers like to learn more about my writing process<\/strong>, seeing pictures of my office, and how I get my ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Keep the conversation light by sharing recipes, hobbies, family (if you\u2019re comfortable doing so) and pets. I have a lot of animals in my book (especially dogs and horses), so that\u2019s a great tie-in. My sister owns an animal sanctuary, so I often mention her. Where are your books located? On the beach or in the mountains? That\u2019s another great tie-in. What do your characters do for a living?<\/span><\/p>\n

Consider a Video Takeover\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I have hosted Facebook Live events where I talk to readers and answer their questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a ring light and a good pair of Bose headphones for this.<\/strong> I usually introduce whoever is around (including my dogs and cats) and have my husband fielding questions from the chat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another way to use video is to take short clips on your camera. I\u2019ve had my grandson help me with these. Show yourself making a dish in the kitchen as you talk to your readers or introduce your pets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Readers want to see the real you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay on Brand\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

While you won\u2019t be hawking your book all day, remember to stay on brand with what you write.<\/span><\/p>\n

My books all take place in western states in small towns and on ranches<\/strong>, so I share recipes like Cowboy Beans and talk about ranch animals as well as my domestic pets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Forget Giveaways\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Readers love giveaways!<\/span><\/p>\n

Be creative in what you offer. I usually give away a couple of backlist books in the same series as my current release. Since my series is all about service dogs, I also give away dog-themed prizes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Be sure to let readers know they can comment on any<\/i> of your posts to be considered for the giveaway.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Announce the winners late at night or the next day so those who work in day jobs have the opportunity to participate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Takeovers Should Be Fun!\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Most importantly, enjoy your interactions with readers. Try to answer every post, even if it\u2019s just a \u201clike\u201d or one of the other reaction buttons. Keep conversations flowing and be open to pivoting if readers show special interest in a subject.<\/span><\/p>\n

Be sure to share where readers can find your books and how to sign up for your newsletter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Takeovers are a wonderful opportunity to gain new readers and interact with those who are already fans. Have a blast!<\/span><\/p>\n
