{"id":24074,"date":"2021-04-27T03:00:46","date_gmt":"2021-04-27T10:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/?p=24074"},"modified":"2021-04-21T05:49:38","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T12:49:38","slug":"7-clues-to-good-fiction-writing-by-kay-keppler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/27\/7-clues-to-good-fiction-writing-by-kay-keppler\/","title":{"rendered":"7 Clues to Good Fiction Writing by Kay Keppler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/7-Clues-to-Good-Fiction-Writing-by-Kay-Keppler.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-24075 size-medium\" title=\"7 Clues to Good Fiction Writing by Kay Keppler\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/7-Clues-to-Good-Fiction-Writing-by-Kay-Keppler-300x300.png\" alt=\"7 Clues to Good Fiction Writing by Kay Keppler\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/7-Clues-to-Good-Fiction-Writing-by-Kay-Keppler.png 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/7-Clues-to-Good-Fiction-Writing-by-Kay-Keppler-80x80.png 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Let\u2019s welcome back monthly columnist, editor, and novelist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writersfunzone.com\/blog\/?s=kay+keppler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kay Keppler<\/a>, as she shares with us \u201c7 Clues to Good Fiction Writing.&#8221; <em>Enjoy! <\/em><\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>When I\u2019m reading for pleasure<\/strong>, my favorite genre is mystery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I like the puzzle, I tend to appreciate the characters\u2019 quirks, and I like the justice\u2014emotional and legal\u2014that comes at the end when the killer is revealed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/EXcg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dana Stabenow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is one of my favorite mystery writers, a best-selling author with a couple of long-running series and an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theedgars.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to her name.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent article published on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writersdigest.com\/write-better-fiction\/7-tips-for-writing-crime-fiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WritersDigest.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she outlined seven tips for mystery writers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>For those who are planning or in the process of writing a mystery<\/strong>, these suggestions are invaluable. However, they really apply to any kind of fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, your mileage may vary. Everyone works differently and might even approach different books differently. Try things to see what works and skip the rest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stabenow says:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Begin with the murder.<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get into the victim\u2019s head as they die. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong>Make it as real and as awful as you can. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This invests the reader with sympathy for the victim no matter how horrible they were in life and lends that much more urgency to your protagonist\u2019s quest to find the murderer. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will make finding the killer that much more urgent for the writer as well.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>No murder? No problem! <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get into your characters\u2019 heads anyway.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether your character dies a victim or lives to suffer another day, give your readers a reason to invest emotionally in your characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Love your creeps.<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put the villain on display and do it early in the narrative. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get your reader invested in the character and then betray the hell out of both of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every story needs an antagonist. Make yours deliciously nasty.\u00a0<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Put your protagonist at risk.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physically, mentally, emotionally, any or all. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[One of Stabenow\u2019s sleuths] Liam Campbell jumped out of an airplane (on purpose), was nearly flattened by a herd of walrus, and has been shot at and missed far too many times. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We won\u2019t even go into his love life or his family damage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Let\u2019s face it:<\/strong> We\u2019re all a hot mess. Make your heroes human so your readers can relate to them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro tip<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Don\u2019t make them drunks or addicts or on the spectrum, because all of those things have been done to death. So to speak.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides making your heroes human, readers love to see how they solve problems and get out of scrapes. It gives everyone hope they can do likewise.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Make your protagonist a hero, if not in his own eyes, then in everyone else\u2019s.<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hero is better than you and me; that\u2019s why they are heroes and why they deserve their own novel and you and I don\u2019t. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong>How? <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, the hero always Does the Right Thing and justice is served, if not the law.*<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*If you don\u2019t know the difference you\u2019re in the wrong business.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some books\u2014even some mysteries\u2014have ambiguous endings. Do those work? You\u2014and your readers\u2014will be the judge.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Never neglect setting.<\/span><\/i><b>*<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s key to everything that follows. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does it look like, smell like, sound like, feel like? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong>What effect does the setting have on the characters, and why? <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you figure out the setting, you can figure out who lives there and after that what they\u2019re up to.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Maps are always good, for you and for the reader.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting can be another \u201ccharacter\u201d in your book. Use it effectively, and it shapes who your characters are and what they do.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Decide early on if you\u2019re writing a series or a stand-alone.<\/span><\/i><b>*<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t introduce that great character only to kill him off at the end of the first book of a 22-book (and counting) series. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong>Don\u2019t ask me how I know.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Realize that a book can turn on you at any time, and often will.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, this tip is probably only for mystery writers. But if you\u2019re writing a mystery, it\u2019s good advice.\u00a0<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Backstory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every single character gets one, including the guy who shows up once to deliver the mail. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong>It can be as little as a sentence or as much as a subplot running through the entire narrative. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The supporting cast is what makes a great book and what gives a series long legs.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your hero and villain drive the plot, but your secondary characters carry the themes and motifs and can supply a point or counterpoint of humor or pathos for your story. Imbuing them with rich detail only enhances the narrative.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Finally,<\/strong> your book needs at least one character that readers will like and can identify with or root for, because most readers won\u2019t stick with a story populated by characters they\u2019re not interested in.
