***<\/span><\/p>\n

As spring arrives,<\/strong> I\u2019ve been putting the finishing touches on the novel I\u2019ve been working on steadily for nearly two years now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a regular here, you may have seen some of my <\/span>posts<\/span><\/a>\u00a0about the journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While I\u2019ve been working on the novel for that amount of time<\/strong>, the original project is more like twenty years in the making because it\u2019s based on a screenplay I wrote back in 2000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It turns out that was only a fraction of the story. Once I was finished with the original version of the novel, it was so long I decided to divide it in half and turn it into a series of novels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that the first book in the series is coming to a close<\/strong> (the writing and editing, that is), I find myself between major projects, with some time to turn to other projects I\u2019ve been meaning to get to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have the feeling I used to have in school when I\u2019d been in a play, with nightly play practice and learning my lines taking up the better part of my time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the play was over and those blocks of time were no longer filled with play practice<\/strong>, I felt somewhat adrift, without the focal point of the upcoming performance to occupy my mind and every waking moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What would I do in those gaps of time?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How would my \u201cfree time\u201d now best be put to use?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are questions I\u2019m now considering again, all these years later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have some ideas, so here they are:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Write some pieces of <\/span>flash fiction<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

This is something I\u2019ve been wanting to do, but it seems like I\u2019m forever in the midst of a long, time consuming project. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Not that there\u2019s anything wrong with that at all! I love working on big projects, and I\u2019m still learning as I go.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve noticed that other writers I follow sometimes mention on posts that they\u2019re taking a break from something longer to create a piece of flash.<\/strong> I\u2019m inspired to do the same from time to time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It might give me some perspective so that I come back to the longer project refreshed and ready to tackle it anew.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some recent pieces of flash I\u2019ve read are still stuck in my mind<\/strong>, so I\u2019m inspired by the work of fellow writers. I\u2019m on the look-out for subjects for some flash pieces of my own to submit to the growing number of publications looking for really short pieces that pack a punch!<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Write the creative nonfiction I\u2019ve been mulling over for so long.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve had an idea for a long time about a piece of nonfiction I want to write. Want to write? Why not write it now?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether I\u2019m in the midst of another project or not<\/strong>, I\u2019m committing to making the time to go ahead and brainstorm and organize my ideas for essays and nonfiction and get writing already!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of these ideas may become flash pieces as well, and some may be lengthier, but I won\u2019t know until I get going on them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I did start writing one the other day.<\/strong> In retrospect I realize that I was giving too much history on the topic rather than getting to the heart of the matter of what I want to say. It took the actual writing to realize that, so there\u2019s no better way to get closer to getting it done than just diving right in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Develop my online course.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Don\u2019t get me started on this. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>By that I mean I can\u2019t believe how long it\u2019s taken for me to get started on this! <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I\u2019ve talked about developing online courses about film and film genres for what seems like forever. <\/strong>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I did start on it once, but that was long ago. Now it\u2019s time to finish that mini-course, launch it, and get started on another.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Be more consistent with my website blog.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve tried to do this before and have even talked about it here in this very space, but lately I\u2019ve committed more fully to planning my posts, written and visual, and coordinating those with my social media activity. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I\u2019m now fired up to do this consistently more than eve<\/strong>r, and I\u2019m very excited about my current project and others I have planned, so this is now a definite go!<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Engage with my growing online community.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

As I said before, I\u2019m inspired by the work of my fellow writers and have been enjoying their posts, tips, and links to their recently published work on social media. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I also like it when they share the challenges they\u2019re facing in their writing and their lives as writers<\/strong>, as well as how they\u2019re dealing with them. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>It\u2019s been quite a while since I\u2019ve felt as much a part of a supportive writing community, and I\u2019m encouraged to see writers supporting other writers and sharing. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Many of us are introverts, as I\u2019m sure you well know. <\/strong>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I myself often have a hard time sharing, but finding a group of writers who share an interest in your chosen genre, style, or just who love writing in general can be a way to help you stay motivated, whether they\u2019re located in your community, or afar. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>If you\u2019ve been keeping to yourself a great deal lately<\/strong>, as so many of us have, I encourage you to break out of your cocoon and try your wings\u2014reaching out to others, whether electronically or at the local coffee shops as they begin to reopen\u2014safely distanced, of course!<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Re-visit my earlier novel for a thorough rewrite and submission.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

I wrote a novel three years ago and had trouble stretching it out to novel-length. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Since then,<\/strong> I believe I\u2019ve at long last found my prose voice with this latest project I\u2019ve been working on.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>So I\u2019m going to take another look at this one to see what I can improve, now that I\u2019m able to consider it in the fullness of time.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span> Then I\u2019m going to send it out there.<\/strong> This one is in a totally different genre than the other, but I believe what I\u2019ve learned while working on the latest will help in the further development of this project. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I\u2019ll let you know how it turns out.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Get organized!\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

I saved this one until last because it\u2019s vitally important and ensures that I stay on top of all those other things I just mentioned. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I\u2019ve been making a real effort to maintain my calendar regarding deadlines and submission dates<\/strong>, and I have a datebook with places for everything that I can easily adapt to my needs. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I love checking off items that I\u2019ve very much wanted to do, having done them. I like using Sharpies and colored pencils to add a tad of artistic flare to my calendar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m getting organized and taking action steps, which leads to more checkmarks<\/strong>, which I like very much.<\/span><\/p>\n

These are some ways I\u2019m filling the gap between major, all-consuming projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that I\u2019ve shared these with you, I\u2019ve decided they aren\u2019t just gap-fillers, but great habits to adopt and maintain all the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s to a great spring filled with breakthroughs and joy in projects large and small<\/strong>, and everything in between.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
