We get it. To make a good story, we include a villain (usually another human) to offset our hero to create conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Good guy vs. bad guy<\/strong>\u2014back and forth until the good guy triumphs at the end and the villain is defeated. Woo-hoo\u2026 truth and justice win!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, ho-hum. Yawn\u2026 yawn\u2026 yawn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, I\u2019m being snarky.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If we didn\u2019t love these stories where the hero outsmarts the villain<\/strong>, that trope would have died out centuries ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to keep these stories \u201cfresh\u201d is to have your reader fall in love with not only the hero, but with the villain as well. To the point where the reader will secretly fall in love with the bad guy, rooting for them from time-to-time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the best way to do this?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why make them flawed, of course!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resist the urge to make your bad guy, someone who is ugly and has no redeeming qualities. A boring cardboard stereotype whose every action is glaringly predictable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/doctor.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-24054\" title=\"doctor\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/doctor-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"doctor\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/doctor-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/doctor.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>5 Suggestions to Fix Your Villain\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These aren\u2019t in a specific order, just some fun ways to fix your bad guy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><b>Parents matter\u2014even to a villain.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That includes orphans. The absence of parents can be a motivational force in their (or anyone\u2019s) life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was how they were raised a main factor on what drives them? Here are a couple of examples in my own work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The main bad guy in my <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerikruspe.com\/the-alien-exchange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alien Exchange universe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0has been shaped by his family and how they treated him growing up.<\/strong> The lack of love and recognition (all because he didn\u2019t look like others in his race, especially his identical twin who did) drove him to extremes to prove his worth. Not only to his elitist parents, but to the entire galaxy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my second series, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerikruspe.com\/ancient-aliens-descendants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ancient Alien Descendants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the main villain discovers he is not the legitimate blood heir to the throne of a planet, so he has to commit all sorts of atrocities to ensure no one finds out so he isn\u2019t executed.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> What (or who) does the villain love?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The villain who only wants to take over the galaxy (what do you expect? I write scifi romance so it\u2019s all about the bigger stuff\u2026) is tedious and has been overdone. But if you can somehow put in what they love, it gives them an added dimension.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The best part of it doesn\u2019t have to be anything big.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The villain in my latest series actually loves his people. He feels that if he wasn\u2019t in charge, they\u2019d succumb to extinction. He just happens to be a self-absorbed narcissist at the same time\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> Why do they do the things they do?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s where the big \u201cM\u201d word comes in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/26\/finding-characters-motivation-kay-keppler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">motivation.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do they want to take over the world?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do they hate the hero and want to mess their lives up?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Uncover the deep, deep roots that drive the villain and what they want.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexander the Great wanted to conquer the world to show up his father. (There goes those pesky parents again\u2026).<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> What would make this person the hero?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if you wrote your novel from the villain\u2019s point of view?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would he have to do to make himself the hero?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>They end up doing things that might be wrong,<\/strong> but they firmly believe they have the right to kidnap\/kill\/torture anyone who they deem deserves it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aren\u2019t righteous villains the really scary kind? (Think <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thanos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thanos of the Marvel Avengers series<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> Install in your villain, a trait you\u2019d love for yourself.<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if your villain was crazy smart or a cunning manipulator?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are they decisive, able to make their minds up immediately?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Or\u2014maybe they are master storytellers who created worlds people are dying to be a part of\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Thoughts.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-24055 size-medium\" title=\"thoughts \" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Thoughts-300x169.png\" alt=\"thoughts\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Thoughts-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Thoughts.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Other Thoughts on Characteristics of the Villains\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>The Antagonist\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person you\u2019re not quite sure is as bad as you think, or maybe they\u2019re just misunderstood. The hero may have found the strength to overcome, but the villain gets dragged down instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>They\u2019re Better than the Hero<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re more charming, seemingly kinder, smarter, or well-informed. Make your readers cheer on the hero to become more like the villain. A great example would be Loki in the Marvel universe. He\u2019s smarter and way more humble than Thor could ever be.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Crazy One<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can spot these folks a mile away. The Joker\/Hannibal Lector\/Harley Quinn\u2026 These bad guys are overblown, excessive, obsessive, narcissistic and delusional. Most of all, they\u2019re unpredictable (ooh\u2026. the fun\u2026). They come in like a massive hurricane and destroy everything in their path.
