Understand Perspective: Point of View<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step to putting myself in the place of others is to realize I\u2019m standing at a completely different position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Everyone has a particular background and set of experiences that shapes their concerns and purposes<\/strong>, and gives them a perspective that\u2019s not quite the same as\u00a0 anyone else\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s as if we\u2019ve each been given a slightly different pair of tinted glasses to wear: in order to truly see what it\u2019s like to look through another person\u2019s lens, you have to remove your own first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Being aware of this makes it a bit easier to mindfully unpack <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2020\/10\/22\/your-characters-why-its-everything-heres-why-and-how-by-beth-barany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">characters\u2019 motivations and developments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a more tangible note, carefully considering which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/27\/resources-on-point-of-view-pov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">point of view<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your story is to be told through can also make a difference in the inclusivity of your writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Choosing to tell a story from the first person or third-person limited viewpoint<\/strong>, for example, allows you to delve into the inner workings of a character\u2019s mind, and this can reveal specific emotions or thought processes very well. In such a case, the stylistic choices you make as a narrator can also portray diversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reedsy.com\/discovery\/blog\/childrens-books-about-diversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inclusive children\u2019s book<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/7AHKw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juli\u00e1n is a Mermaid<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, told in third person limited, the use of \u201cabuela\u201d for grandmother adds another layer of diversity to the overarching gender-inclusive theme. A choice like this is small and sometimes only subconsciously registered by readers, but it builds a more elaborate and realistic representation of your character\u2019s background.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Read Outside of Your Comfort Zone\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with voice, style, and plotting, you can learn a lot about writing diversely through reading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If you\u2019re writing about a particular historical event<\/strong>, for instance, reading nonfiction about that time period will naturally be part of your research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/qbBA4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">111 Trees<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/fZ0m1uI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Superheroes Are Everywhere<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, reading diaries and other primary sources of the people you want to represent is important work that you must do before you write. But even beyond that, reading about a variety of cultures and perceptions, in both fiction and nonfiction, can naturally expose you to more ideas and keep you thinking about diversity without having to actively remind yourself to do it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>On a more empathic level,<\/strong> perusing diverse books lets you slip into different worlds and minds the same way talking to people does. It might even be more useful, since you have the time to mull over details, and the author has also honed their prose or verses to deliver the strongest and most important messages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any case, constantly stepping out of the areas you already know to discover other perspectives is always a wonderful and enriching thing to do. And it goes without saying, but there\u2019s no better way to support diverse authors and booksellers than purchasing and reading their titles!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Include Intersectional Diversity\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another good way to approach inclusivity is not to think about a character as a specific <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kind<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of character.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, you shouldn\u2019t add a diverse character for diversity\u2019s sake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>Nobody is just Black or white or Asian or Latinx.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>Nobody is just gay or straight or bisexual or transgender<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everybody is a mixture of several aspects of identity, and the most endearing characters reflect that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.reedsy.com\/how-to-start-writing-a-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starting to write a story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sketch out characters that have a multitude of identities, so you can better construct moments where those parts of their identity get to shine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider their ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, social class, and whether they are disabled or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You might find that each combination of backgrounds can create a different collection of values and concerns.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, a second generation Vietnamese immigrant who\u2019s descended from war refugees may have a very different outlook on their ancestry than a Vietnamese who\u2019s parents have invested in their education by sending them to boarding schools abroad. Understanding and appreciating this intersectionality asks you to be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/24\/confusing-times-call-for-more-dedicated-writers-by-nevada-mcpherson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dedicated writer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who\u2019s ready to dive into various research projects, but all of it pays off when your writing becomes inclusive without falling prey to typecasting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.
