The path has too many forks in the road. You are frozen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look at the moment in the manuscript where you are stalled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why can\u2019t you progress?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you need to know?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What must be clear in your mind?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Maybe what you need is a better outline<\/strong>, or more research. And sometimes what might appear to be writer\u2019s block is really indecision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need more information to proceed, ask yourself what information\u2014and what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kind<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of information\u2014you\u2019re looking for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it crucial?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or could you write something and then change your mind later without harming your manuscript\u2019s core concept?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Writer\u2019s block:<\/b> <b>Question? Or indecision?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re not sure of where you want to go, or you are just stuck somewhere, you might benefit from keeping track of the questions that you must answer\u2014or simply <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to answer\u2014in the manuscript. Think of these as either <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crucial <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minor <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcome Writer\u2019s Block: Ask Crucial Questions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Crucial questions are those that you <\/b><b><i>must<\/i><\/b><b> answer before you can proceed, because this information forms the spine of your book.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These could be structural or plotting decisions or questions that need research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Examples might be<\/strong>, \u201cHow do police investigate a suspicious death?\u201d or \u201cCould I build a rocket ship with the tools in my garage?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give yourself permission to spend some time working out the answers to these kinds of questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If you need expert help<\/strong>, search out friends and acquaintances, your favorite librarian, scientist, police officer\u2014whoever you can\u2014for advice and answers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting the basics right is critical for your story to hang together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time you know everything you can or need to know about the topic, the way past your problem will be clarified.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcome Writer\u2019s Block: Ask Minor Questions Too<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Minor questions do not need to be answered immediately.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of questions involving point of view (should this scene be written from the POV of Character A or Character B?) or even continuity questions (did she drive a red car or a blue one?).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The red or blue car can be checked later, or in revisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The POV scene can be written one way<\/strong>, and if you don\u2019t like it, that, too, can be changed in revision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The basic information, character shift, or plot development doesn\u2019t change, even if the POV does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizational missteps can always be fixed in revision, as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that chase scene in chapter four comes too early or too late, you can always move it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>To Overcome Your Writer\u2019s Block, Pick a Lane\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If uncertainty is stalling you on the minor questions, it won\u2019t harm the manuscript if you just pick a lane and decide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does your character work at a bowling alley or an art gallery?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Don\u2019t overthink it.<\/strong> Go with what feels right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many writers have limited time and attention to write, especially these days, and writing in small chunks with many distractions can mean that we lose track of what we intended to do in our manuscript.
