It’s a new year and time for new writing goals, but that isn’t what I’m going to talk about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though I have those<\/strong>, I’m committed right now to finishing projects that are undergoing a final edit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I do have ideas, and one resolution that I intend to see through is to act on my ideas, and the concept that \u201cdone is better than perfect.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tips for Writing: When is Something Done?<\/span><\/h2>\n

So how does one know when something is done?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After all, it’s impossible to apply the \u201cbake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean\u201d rule to writing. Or is it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the holidays<\/strong>, I’ve been doing lots of cooking and baking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s wisdom in those things, and tried-and-true techniques that I\u2019m learning to apply to other areas of my life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a bad habit of coming up with great<\/strong> (or at least workable) ideas worthy of exploration that I sit on until the time has passed when they might have had the most impact, or until I forget about them only to realize later, \u201cI should have done\/written\/posted that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why do I let this happen?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tips for Writing: Overcoming the Fear of Failure<\/span><\/h2>\n

One reason is the paralyzing fear of failure: not necessarily cosmic failure on a grand scale, which I\u2019ll discuss in a moment, but the thought that if something isn\u2019t perfect now it will become so in time. So I wait for the perfect time, or for the thing itself to become perfect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the interim,<\/strong> perfectly good things are sitting on a shelf undone because they may not be what I consider \u201cperfect.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From now on I will adhere to the mantra: \u201cLet\u2019s throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks,\u201d which may sound haphazard, but which is based on a kitchen trick that I\u2019ve used for years to excellent effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tips for Writing Come From Cooking\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

A couple of days ago I cooked spaghetti. The pasta was supposed to cook for six minutes, so I set my timer and at the end of the six minutes, took out a single noodle and threw it up against the wall to see if it stuck. If the pasta noodle is done, it\u2019s supposed to stick to the wall, and it did, and the pasta was delicious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve done this for years when I didn\u2019t set a timer<\/strong>, and it\u2019s always my go-to method of ascertaining the done-ness of my pasta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am only now realizing that this concept has merit in my writing life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From now on I will \u201cthrow it up against the wall\u201d via making more submissions, sharing more posts,<\/strong> quotes, excerpts and comments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I will reach out more often, connect in more meaningful ways, essentially, \u201cjust do it already,\u201d and move on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What happens on the rare occasions when the strand of pasta doesn\u2019t stick to the wall?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then you leave it to boil a minute or two more and try again, so times when something doesn\u2019t seem to connect means back to the drawing board.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fine. Rephrase, revise, edit and repeat. Eventually it will stick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More Kitchen Tips for Writing\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u2019ve been making more stir-fried meals recently. I didn\u2019t know until trying this with a recipe the other day that pressing extra-firm tofu before browning it in the pan makes it hold together far better than not pressing it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pressing removes the extra liquid so that it holds its shape in the pan.<\/strong> I\u2019m rewarded with neat, tasty cubes of tofu that stand up to stir-frying with spicy glazing sauce and vegetables, rather than squishy, shapeless blobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m using this technique now as I finish editing my novel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve made several passes through it before<\/strong>, thinking I needed much more than I do, but on this pass-through, I\u2019m seeing the bloated word-count drop as I \u201cpress\u201d the unnecessary words, phrases, description and dialogue from this draft, leaving me with the tasty morsels, the essence of character and story: the best parts without all that squish that up until now I didn\u2019t realize might not stand up under high heat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are other techniques that I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll be applying as the new year gets underway so I\u2019ll share those in another post another day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the meantime,<\/strong> a word about the fear of cosmic failure that I mentioned before: that only happens on a grand scale when one <\/span>never<\/span><\/i> tries to do that thing that one very much wants to do, or dreams of doing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no real failure in trying to do something and not succeeding, only to try another day. That\u2019s a temporary set-back, not a failure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides,<\/strong> you can\u2019t bake a cake without breaking a few eggs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no use crying over spilled milk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no such thing as perfect.<\/span><\/p>\n
