As normality appears to be a pipe dream, I\u2019m concerned that my marketing efforts should change during these trying times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Who hasn\u2019t witnessed shuttered bookstores,<\/strong> canceled events, postponed release dates, unpredictable sales trends, and packed online calendars?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though I still consider myself a newbie author, I wanted to make sure I was keeping up with the times. Even with my limited experience of publishing five books in two years, I\u2019ve seen a dramatic shift in how the market accepts entertainment in all its forms. So, I did some research to see what others were doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>TRADITIONAL PUBLISHERS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Bookstore.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23801 size-medium\" title=\"Bookstore\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Bookstore-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"Bookstore\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Bookstore-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Bookstore.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I started with what traditional publishers have done. Maybe they were doing something I could (or should) duplicate. It surprised me they had helpful hints I\u2019d be able to try. I hope you can pick out something that inspires you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In a BookBub<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insights.bookbub.com\/publishers-book-marketing-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diana Urban in April of this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she gives several highlights on what they\u2019re doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They\u2019re telling readers what to expect from them in an email.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Recommendations, deals, and personalized content.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are asking their audience to follow them on social media and their website for fun content that encourages folks to read instead stuck watching the boob-tube!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Creating ways for readers to connect with authors.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the bread and butter of a published author is in-person book\/launch events [bold]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some instead do \u201cMeet the Author\u201d events on social media (i.e. Instagram). The videos are pre-recorded and uploaded at Stories instead of Live.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some have shifted publication dates.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>That\u2019s not to say they have pushed the dates back.<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some had moved up their publication. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they\u2019d hoped in the summer and fall that the epidemic would have faded, that didn\u2019t turn out that way. The publishers had to scramble with the onset of winter to accommodate the \u201cnon\u201d change that happened since then and expanded their social media reach.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hosting virtual book festivals.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>They wanted to give the readers something entertaining to do while at home. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Some created festivals at least a week long.<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They held sweepstakes, author chats, and more. Included for the festival was a dedicated website for readers to check out and learn about the agenda and sweepstakes details.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Books have been reprinted to meet new demands.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>This has been especially true for <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>children&#8217;s educational and activity books.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Providing free content for students.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>They are providing some free content to help students continue their education. <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They provided access and online learning to enable librarians and teachers to have access to their resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hosting virtual readings.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Instead of book readings at bookstores,<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> some publishers created virtual readings on the social media channels<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They post an agenda on their website.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Publishers have been supporting independent bookstores.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Simon &amp; Schuster partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bookshop.org<\/a> in a campaign to support independent booksellers. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They offer steep discounts.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Some did<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> price drops while others offered a free book with a purchase.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They encourage readers to help flatten the curve.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>With social media, they\u2019ve encouraged their readers to stay home to help flatten the curve. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They stress this will help hospitals and health care professionals get less overwhelmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>I would <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encourage my writer friends to read this list and see if there is anything there they can duplicate. Why reinvent the wheel, eh?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/woman-thinking.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23802\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/woman-thinking-300x209.png\" alt=\"woman thinking\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/woman-thinking-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/woman-thinking.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 More Tips\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.publishdrive.com\/5-tips-publishing-a-book-during-a-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinga Jentetics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also in April of this year) gave \u201c5 Tips for Publishing a Book (During a Pandemic)\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article mentions that even in uncertain times, there are ways to keep up with the challenges before us. I don\u2019t mention everything in the article, just those that I believe pertain to us indie authors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They recommend three different formats you can take advantage of:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ebooks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Print-on-Demand<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audiobooks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Go Wide\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article stresses that in unpredictable times, that\u2019s the best way to get the most of your selling potential. It stresses that 61% of sales are outside Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Promote\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newsletter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Send out review copies to:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/publishdrive.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PublishDrive (a Written Word Media promotions)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freebooksy.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freebooksy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bargainbooksy.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bargain Booksy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newinbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NewInBooks<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and #1 site for romance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfeatherromance.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red Feather Romance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Plan for Tomorrow!\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we look back at the challenges 2020 brought us (ha\u2026 2020 hindsight!), what accomplishment will we be the proudest of?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>One thing I\u2019ve done religiously is polish up several venues I use.<\/strong> I\u2019ve had my website \u201ccleaned up\u201d by a professional and made sure all my professional bios on several sites (BookBub, Amazon, and social media) are updated. I even had my author pic taken by a professional this fall!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one challenge I\u2019ve been putting off is updating my auto emails when folks sign up for my newsletter. I\u2019ve got to roll up my sleeves and just get it done\u2026 hopefully before the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some other suggestions on ways to clean up your venues online:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/authorcentral.amazon.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Author Central bio page on Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 as good as it could be?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you read up on marketing copywriting\/ book descriptions?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have a bank of social media posts and images you can pull later when you\u2019re \u201cbusy\u201d?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for an unknown author in your genre (someone you don\u2019t know) and read their book. Then follow them, get to know them, follow their blog, subscribe to their newsletter, befriend new people in their circle. That way you will expand your circle of friends and it will help your fellow authors!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope you all stay safe\u2026 stay happy\u2026 and stay healthy.
