In last month\u2019s article<\/b>, I bared my soul on how my newest release wasn\u2019t selling as much as anticipated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I promised to give you an update, but I\u2019m writing this in the middle of October and I don\u2019t have credible updates yet. I need at least thirty days to get a respectable context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Woman<\/a>In the meantime, I\u2019d like to share an epiphany that put everything in perspective for me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An epiphany<\/span><\/h2>\n

It didn\u2019t hit me until recently that I\u2019d gotten <\/span>lost<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re an author, I hope this little tale will help if you\u2019re lost as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me first start by telling you why I indulge in writing the genre, SciFi Romance. At the end of my story, I\u2019ll explain why this is important.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why I Write\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"star<\/a>A long time ago<\/b>, on a planet we call home, lived a shy, red-headed girl with spectacles who only wanted to spend her day reading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Immersed in stories of heroines<\/strong>, she read every comic book she could get her hands on; from Supergirl to Archie to The Avengers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When she entered the uncharted world of a pre-teen, she came across science fiction novels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Heinlein, Asimov, and McCaffrey became her new best friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Old reruns of Star Trek along with its \u201csequel\u201d The Next Generation combined with Quantum Leap fueled her imagination.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Shanna\"<\/a>Then, in her late teens, she uncovered the passion of her life\u2014romance novels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She submerged in reading the likes of Jude Deveraux<\/strong>, Kathleen Woodiwiss, and Johanna Lindsey. These were mostly historical romances, but an occasional contemporary love story would find its way into her eager hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To her everlasting sorrow<\/span>,<\/span><\/i> the saying<\/span> \u201cand nary the twain shall meet\u201d <\/span><\/i>held true about her two loves, Romance and Science Fiction<\/span>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Until that one glorious day when the two genres bravely joined and began a lifelong journey of harmony and bliss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure by now you guessed that hapless girl was me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The genre of \u201cSciFi Romance\u201d<\/h2>\n

\"lovers<\/a>But once the genre of \u201cSciFi Romance\u201d<\/b> was born, I worried the sub-genre wouldn\u2019t survive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After all, the two separate classifications attract two distinct types of readers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Science fiction (SF) mostly delves into concepts and ideas that change our lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Romance explores the inner<\/strong>, emotional parts of ourselves that strive for a quest of community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SF is great at \u201cwhat if\u201d while Romance creates memorable characters to fall in love with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While I\u2019m being general here (there are always exceptions), I firmly believe when the two tropes merge it produces an ideal canvas to work from. Where one is weak, the other is strong.<\/span><\/p>\n

Too bad it\u2019s tough to convince hard-core SF readers to read Romance<\/strong>, and many romance readers shudder and avoid science fiction. But I felt both genres together created a near limitless avenue of love, adventure, and heart-pounding action.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kit Rocha<\/span><\/a> (author of Gideon\u2019s Riders series) explains the appeal:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSpeculative (sci-fi\/dystopian\/steampunk\/etc.)\u2026 combines all my favorite things\u2014the chance to build new worlds and new cultures, or the chance to take ours and break it down and put it back together with slightly different pieces. When you get to redefine the rules of what love is and how people express it, you get a lot of opportunities to explore new themes\u2014or old themes from a new perspective.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

One of my favorite authors (ever!) is <\/strong>Sherrilyn Kenyon<\/span><\/a>. When asked what about the genre (paranormal) did she like, she put it this way:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBlood, guts, goats, ghosts, zombies, vampires, shapeshifters… Everything. I\u2019ve never been the kind of person who liked to color inside the lines or who wanted to play by other people\u2019s rules. With the paranormal and science fiction and fantasy, the only limitation I have is my imagination. I can do anything and go any place (as long as it makes sense and follows the rules of the worlds I\u2019ve set up). I love the freedom of it all.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Sigh\u2014what\u2019s not to love?<\/span><\/p>\n

Empowering Women<\/span><\/h2>\n

Another aspect of writing SciFi Romance is a biggie for me: it empowers women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I thank the stars above that the women in today\u2019s romance story aren\u2019t afraid to be in charge. They tend to their own needs and desires. And, as with any romance, has a happy ending.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s important to me<\/strong>, especially now. Times are tough for women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When we feel like we have no control over our crazy lives, we want to read stories not only about romance, but about the feeling of being in charge of an adventure. Add to that the promise of finding that certain someone who gets us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s even better for me if that person turns out to be a studly, sexier-than-humanly allowed otherworldly man, er\u2026 male.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"annoyed\"<\/a>Now, here\u2019s the confession<\/b>. In the last couple of months, I\u2019d forgotten everything I just outlined.<\/span><\/p>\n

SORRY TO HEAR THAT, you might ASK, <\/b>\u2026\u00a0 but how does that help <\/span>me<\/i><\/b>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me tell you how it helps in one word\u2026 <\/span>PURPOSE.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

My Purpose, My Why<\/h2>\n

I know this isn\u2019t anything new. But for the first time it really hit me how important it is to feel deep down the purpose <\/span>of why<\/i><\/b> I write.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I became so wrapped up in seeking book sales, I forgot being an author was all about enjoying the craft of writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, I became tense and irritable as I chased the frustrating and elusive task of achieving monetary reward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every day the thought of working on my writing career ended up being an exercise in drudgery and hardship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until I made a conscious choice to let my obsession of sales go that my purpose became clear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I finished up the first draft of the second book in my newest series, it shocked me how much <\/span>fun<\/i><\/b> I was having.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Being immersed in the world I\u2019d created, the hours flew. That hadn\u2019t happened to me in a really long time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"yearbook<\/p>\n

E<\/span>ven better came the realization that the tense pinch between my shoulders finally melted away.<\/p>\n

Deep within my soul, it hit me what was important — creating worlds and characters that <\/span>only I can make<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of allowing marketing to gain an unrealistic grip on my efforts, I\u2019ll instead keep it in proper perspective from here on out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Only then<\/b> will the gangly, red-headed girl in glasses live her dream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
