\"Procrastination<\/a>Let\u2019s welcome back monthly columnist Nevada McPherson<\/a> as she shares with us \u201cProcrastination or Productive? Flashing Forward to Writing The Sequel .\u201d Enjoy!<\/p>\n

***<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been writing here about working on the rough draft of my novel for some time<\/strong>, and now I\u2019m in the editing phase, filling gaps in plot that I might have missed (or avoided) before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I get closer to completing this project that has been my obsession all year, I find that my mind keeps jumping ahead to the sequel, where minor characters from this novel will become major players in the next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s exciting to know that I\u2019m fired up enough about a sequel that I can see it<\/strong>, hear it, feel it and taste it, but I have to keep that one at bay so that I can fully focus on the task at hand, which is completing the project I\u2019m focused on now.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Good Thing about Flashing Forward to Writing The Sequel<\/span><\/h2>\n

The good thing about thinking ahead is that when I re-focus on my current project I have some insight into relationships that will form and character motivation that\u2019s beginning to take shape.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Stanislavski once said,<\/strong> \u201cThere are no small parts, only small actors,\u201d and knowing what will happen next with my minor characters helps me to supply details that elevate them from \u201cminor\u201d to \u201csupporting,\u201d because they support the current story, influencing events and the actions of my major characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bad Thing about Flashing Forward to Writing The Sequel\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The bad thing about thinking ahead is that when I do go beyond the end of the novel I\u2019m working on now, it sometimes feels like pure procrastination.<\/span><\/p>\n

In projecting my imagination into a future project<\/strong>, I realize I\u2019m avoiding hard questions I need to answer to complete today\u2019s difficult scenes and tricky revisions. I start getting the feeling I have when I\u2019m looking at my phone too long, or watching too much television when I really need to get back to work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thinking about my next writing journey definitely has a time and place in the big scheme of things, but giving in to temptation while I\u2019m committed to wrapping up the novel on which I\u2019ve spent the last year, makes me feel guilty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These characters\u2019 growth and development<\/strong>, and their stories are vital as well\u2014they just have to wait their turn!<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m Not Alone in Flashing Forward to Writing The Sequel\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

At least I know that when it comes to this phenomenon, I\u2019m not alone in my tendency to jump ahead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve come across other writers in my online community who say the same thing happens to them.<\/strong> <\/span>Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon<\/span><\/a>\u00a0echoes the idea in a quote posted on <\/span>The Script Lab website<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIdeas are the easy part. I spend a lot of time batting them away, trying to keep them from distracting me from what I actually have to focus on and finish.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, here\u2019s to a focused fall,<\/strong> and to finishing what we\u2019re working on now\u2014while looking forward to the next shiny new project!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
