These are the stakes for the POV character, usually a main character and ties back to goal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A student recently asked me:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> When introducing a scene, what if there are three or more people in a scene, there must be a clever way to organically place them in a scene. Especially if they are all there at the start of the scene, right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Yes!<\/p>\n<h2>An Example and Walkthrough on How to Stage Your Scene<\/h2>\n<p>To show you how, I\u2019ll share an example.<\/p>\n<p>1. Start by getting a big picture view of the scene opening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Here\u2019s mine:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Sally, Martin, and Joelle are at a caf\u00e9 together.<\/p>\n<p>2. State the scene\u2019s point of view character.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The scene is from Joelle&#8217;s point of view.<\/p>\n<p>3. Be clear about where in the story your scene takes place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Let\u2019s say we\u2019re somewhere in the middle of the story.<\/p>\n<p>4. List the elements for your story; be specific:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where the scene takes place<\/li>\n<li>When the scene is happening relative to the action of the story<\/li>\n<li>Who is in the scene<\/li>\n<li>Goal for point of view (POV) character<\/li>\n<li>And why we should care \u2013 the stakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Here\u2019s mine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Where: a caf\u00e9 in Paris (why not!); near Canal St. Martin, Caf\u00e9 Prune<\/li>\n<li>When: 10 pm, a balmy summer night; the sun is just setting; it\u2019s the next day after the previous scene<\/li>\n<li>Who: Sally, Martin, and Joelle; also, a waiter, passers-by; cars, pedestrians, street musicians<\/li>\n<li>Goal: Joelle wants to make a movie and convince sally and martin, a couple, to fund her<\/li>\n<li>Stakes: if she doesn\u2019t get this movie made, then she\u2019s back to square one, an unknown filmmaker, and has to get money from someone else<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Reminder<\/strong><br \/>\nOur goal here is to introduce the scene, not write the entire scene. We just want to hook the reader and draw them in. So they\u2019ll read on.<\/p>\n<p>I like to do this in 2-4 sentences. Here\u2019s my draft without any story built around it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My finished example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The next night, just as the sun set on a warm summer day, Joelle exited the metro, hoofed it the few blocks to Caf\u00e9 Prune, and arrived just as Sally and Martin did. They greeted each other with les bises, got their drinks, and settled in at a table on the terrace facing Canal St. Martin. It was quieter there.
