\"Novel<\/a>Let\u2019s welcome back monthly columnist Nevada McPherson<\/a> as she shares with us \u201cNovel Revisions: Cakes and Pies.\u201d Enjoy!<\/p>\n

***<\/p>\n

At long last, I\u2019m finally in the process of completing the rough draft of my novel.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I feel like I\u2019m hitting the occasional wall but for the most part I\u2019m hurtling toward \u201cthe end.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I read through,<\/strong> I find some parts are overall how I want them and others are still in a chaotic state of flux.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I know I\u2019ll have my work cut out for me on the revision(s), but feel I have to get to a point of calling it a complete rough draft and printing it out before I can really go to the next step.<\/span><\/p>\n

I remember being at the Austin Film Festival years ago and seeing a panel featuring filmmaker <\/strong>Paul Bartel<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and some other writer\/directors, as well as Greg Beale, director of the <\/span>Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>They were discussing the writing process and how often one version of a work-in-progress blends in with the next as writers seek to complete a project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul Bartel said, yes, but \u201cevery so often, you print one out and that\u2019s a draft.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, when I\u2019m finished with the short list of scenes I have left, I\u2019ll print this out and it will be an actual rough draft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Novel Revisions: Cut Your Darlings<\/span><\/h2>\n

This rough draft will be incredibly long, so I\u2019ll no doubt have to cut, cut, cut.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If, as some say,<\/strong> the rough draft is a way of telling yourself the story, I\u2019ll now have to go through a rigorous editing process known as \u201ckilling your darlings\u201d where even when you like (or <\/span>love<\/span><\/i>) a line, scene, or character; if it\u2019s not integral to the story, it has to go.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is where you can delete it or put it in a notebook for future reference, if you so choose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I\u2019m currently cutting a scene here and there,<\/strong> I have a file for \u201couttakes\u201d where I paste scenes that I\u2019m not using now but want to have them all together in case I need to refer to them for any reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Novel Revisions: Do Your Scenes Have Enough \u201cCakes and Pies\u201d?<\/span><\/h2>\n

One thing I\u2019ll consider as I go through my first revision is which scenes have enough \u201ccakes and pies\u201d to keep the story moving forward and keep the reader engaged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a crazy Idea I had the other day when I was watching the <\/strong>Three Stooges: Moe, Larry, and Curly (or Shemp) of the Three Stooges comedy team from the short films of the 1930\u2019s-1950\u2019s.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In these shorts, there\u2019s often a fancy dinner or cocktail party with a lot of swells, and the Three Stooges find some way to crash it posing as guests.<\/span><\/p>\n

One delights at the sight of cakes and pies being brought out of the kitchen because one knows that soon a pie will be thrown in someone\u2019s face<\/strong>, then cakes and more pies will start flying, cracking the fa\u00e7ade of propriety and pretentiousness and leading to complete chaos and utter mayhem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cakes and pies I\u2019ll be serving might include a bit of news or explosive knowledge, secrets that aren\u2019t supposed to be shared, a conversation no one was supposed to hear, or something no one was supposed to see.<\/span><\/p>\n

These are things that will create chaos and utter mayhem for my characters<\/strong>, forcing them to take action and to make choices they would rather not have to make.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are things that lead to their transformations and that help me to learn new things about human nature and about myself, so the more cakes and pies, the better.<\/span><\/p>\n
