They are a thick thread in the fabric of America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>For good reason.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was a military spouse for ten years before my husband left the military because of PTSD. In that time, I saw behind the ultra-cool exterior of soldiers to their fun loving, prankster and sometimes slightly immature side. And believe me, even the most serious soldier has one to some degree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was talking with a fellow author the other day who was looking for silly things soldiers do when they aren\u2019t hiding, spying and fighting. They tend to do a lot of that!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soldier Humor\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boy, do I have a list to share with you! So here goes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is an actual list of things soldiers I have known did when they were bored. I\u2019ll offer context when I can.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/duct-tape.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23136\" title=\"duct tape\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/duct-tape-300x263.jpg\" alt=\"duct tape\" width=\"200\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/duct-tape-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/duct-tape.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>They duck taped one of their own to an office chair and left him to either escape or be found. (He was safe in an air-conditioned office, but still.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soldiers often use \u201cdip,\u201d a chewing tobacco product over smoking cigarettes because 1. They can use it while they work, and 2. It doesn\u2019t affect their lung function for physical training the way smoking does. The habit of dip requires 2 things, a can of dip and a receptacle to spit in.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will often glue the aforementioned can of dip to a surface and watch as their fellow soldiers try to grab it as they walk by.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will also often mess with the \u201cspit\u201d bottle, often a soda bottle. Sometimes this is funny, sometimes it\u2019s amazingly gross. I\u2019ll leave that up to your imagination. Remember, they are soldiers, probably a little bored and not at all unwilling to totally gross out their fellow soldier. Many of them are young, usually in their early twenties.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the field, meaning they are camped out in tents practicing for deployments, or deployed, they get even more inventive.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23137\" title=\"map\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/map-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"map\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/map-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/map.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Eating contests to see who can finish a large can of something, such as canned ravioli, beans, etc, first. Usually cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking contests if they get little boxes of some drink, milk or juice.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And competitions on who can draw the most creative map for their next mission. One soldier I knew won this by drawing it on his friend\u2019s back so they \u201cwouldn\u2019t lose it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also knew one soldier who wanted to know what it felt like to be tasered. So, he tasered himself&#8211; multiple times. Only on his leg, and he didn\u2019t hurt himself. Thankfully. Because he was my friend\u2019s brother-in-law.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a Belly Laugh<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the ones that have made me belly laugh:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will send new, young soldiers off on ridiculous errands.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23138\" title=\"rotor wash\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/rotor-wash-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"rotor wash\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/rotor-wash-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/rotor-wash.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Go tell the Sergeant we need a \u201cP*E*P*S*I\u201d (spelled out) can to finish the project.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go get me a few yards of flight line. (The flight line is the airfield where aircraft are parked.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go get me a bucket of rotor wash. This one sounds incredibly likely in an environment full of helicopters. Alas, rotor wash is the air that is pushed down by the helicopter blades, not the substance they clean the rotors with.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Funny Bone\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when you\u2019re writing your soldiers remember they have a funny and sometimes very immature side as much as a serious, down to earth side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The soldiers I knew were amazing men<\/strong>, fathers and husbands, many of them were Special Operators or Special Forces. And I\u2019d trust my life with any one of them. But even the bravest, most serious soldier has to cut loose and have fun sometimes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One final addition that isn\u2019t so much fun as interesting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>My soldier friends did other things too.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interesting Soldier Fun When Bored\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They aren\u2019t silly or pranky, but interesting nonetheless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>One friend didn\u2019t like the food they were eating so he had his grill sent over<\/strong>, got food from the dining hall, and other, local, sources, and cooked for his crew. He even made them pies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, one pie was served with shaving cream for whipped topping, but hey, it was a pie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Another one who ended up with a lot of free time used his building skills.<\/strong> Let me preface this by explaining that in the military everything is shipped packed in plywood. That plywood is then thrown away or burned. This guy managed to get his tools sent over to him and built stuff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>All<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their tents had decks and furniture. Each soldier had a shelf and a bedside table for his cot and most of the tents had wood floors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Never underestimate the creativity of a bored soldier. Never.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One last note, the soldiers I knew, and am referring to, were mostly in special forces or special operations. They get a little more leeway in what they\u2019re allowed to do. And they have regular resupply missions, usually managed by their unit. This means they can request personal items with the assurance they\u2019ll be handled by people they know and trust. And the supply missions are very regular.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Questions?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have other questions about the military?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was a military spouse for 10 years and my husband served 6 of those in special operations.
