We can also use the pitch to guide us as we write our novels. Creating your pitch statement before you start writing a book can become <\/span><b>your secret weapon.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But writing the one-sentence pitch is the most difficult task a writer faces. How do we coalesce the soul of our book into a few words? There is so much going on in our novel. So much to say. How do we refine our thoughts and drill down to the nitty-gritty of our story?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One-Sentence Pitch is A Formula\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, I have a formula. Yes, a formula. It\u2019s like Mad Libs. You fill in the blanks with words of your choosing and then refine the statement until you are satisfied with the outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the Mad Libs Approach to Create Your Pitch<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the basic statement we will start out with:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When (<\/b><b><i>hypothetical situation<\/i><\/b><b>), then the only way (<\/b><b><i>main character<\/i><\/b><b>) can (<\/b><b><i>issue<\/i><\/b><b>) is to (<\/b><b><i>assumption<\/i><\/b><b>).<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step in building a one-sentence pitch is to replace the italicized words above with your own.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Choose a phrase for the hypothetical situation in your book.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the situation at the beginning of your story that will change the life of your main character forever. Here\u2019s an example from my new series, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Londo Chronicles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hypothetical situation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the world is blanketed by a nuclear winter<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. What is your main character\u2019s name?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since I\u2019m writing a pitch for a series, I\u2019m going to use a collective noun, not the name of the main character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Name<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: London vampires<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. What is the issue you are writing about?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All great books are created by writers who have something to say. Books aren\u2019t just about plot and characters and action scenes. Books are about people facing a tough issue and making a tough moral decision about the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Examples of issues are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responsibility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survival<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abandonment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trust<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forbidden love<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Londo Chronicles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the overarching issue is survival. The creatures who fight to survive are humans and vampires. But in a low sunlight world, what race would flourish? Vampires. And what do the vampires have to do to survive, without resorting to living off unpalatable rodents? They have to make sure human blood is available. So survival is my issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Issue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Survival<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. What is the assumption the main character makes about the issue?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Londo Chronicles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, my London vampires assume the only way they can survive is to raise humans like cattle. That means literally keeping humans in the dark\u2014no books, no public meetings, no progress, and above all, no way to develop a second bomb to harm the earth again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Assumption<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: must raise humans like cattle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s Our One-Sentence Pitch\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s take all the terms we defined in Steps 1-4 and plug them into our Mad Libs pitch statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When <\/b><b><i>the world is blanketed by a nuclear winter<\/i><\/b><b><i>,<\/i><\/b><b> the only way <\/b><b><i>London Vampires<\/i><\/b><b> can <\/b><b><i>survive<\/i><\/b><b> is to <\/b><b><i>raise humans like cattle<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is our one-sentence pitch. <\/span><b>But here\u2019s the best part.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside this pitch, we have created a premise. Our main character has made an assumption about survival. The London vampires ASSUME they have to treat humans like cattle in order to survive. <\/span><b>This is my premise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Is this assumption true? Or false?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the series, <\/span><b>I will prove<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that humans and vampires aren\u2019t that much different from each other, and neither race should be treated like animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are having trouble coming up with your premise or assumption, be sure to add \u201cthe only way to\u201d to your issue. That will automatically set up two sides to the assumption. A strong character in a novel will always challenge an \u201conly\u201d statement. It\u2019s human nature to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A character\u2019s assumption about the issue is your premise<\/strong>. That\u2019s what you will set out to prove or disprove. Is your character right to make the assumption or hold a certain belief? Or will they find out they\u2019re wrong and change their minds at the end of the book? The entire book will be about the journey the character takes to find out if they are right or wrong about their assumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every type of literary fiction has a premise<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even a mystery novel will be fired by a premise. The assumption usually belongs to the villain in this type of story. Think of how a mystery usually ends, with the bad guy explaining why they did something or the cops figuring out why the crime was committed. Criminals aren\u2019t hung up on the \u201chow\u201d they did something. It\u2019s always the \u201cwhy.\u201d It\u2019s always about the premise:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When his<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daughter is murdered<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the only way <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roger McBride <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can get <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real justice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">track down the guy and kill him<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leslie Lee is discovered having an affair,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the only way <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can save her<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reputation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silence the blackmailer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Do you see how the Mad Libs technique is employed in the two pitches above?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detectives always want to find out what really happened. What was the motive? What was the belief or assumption that caused a human being to commit a crime? Think of stories that are based on mere psychopathic actions or cult rituals. These types of stories aren\u2019t nearly half as satisfying as ones that involve a \u201cwhy\u201d or a \u201cbelief in something\u201d or an \u201cassumption.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use your one-sentence pitch as a guide\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you use the hypothetical situation\/issue\/assumption method to build your pitch statement, you will automatically build in a premise. You will then know what you are going to prove or disprove at the end of your book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Building the premise first will guide you as you write.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your characters will hold personal beliefs about this premise and will take action in regard to it. And at the end, some of your main characters will change their minds about what they believe as you prove or disprove the premise through your protagonist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitch statements and premises are tough things to tackle. I know. I\u2019m like every other writer. I want to write plot. I want to dive into those action scenes, those love scenes, and those scenes where the heroine meets the hero for the first time. But good stories are crafted around premise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Good stories drive toward proving the premise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you keep your premise as your guiding star\u2014if you know what your one-sentence pitch is\u2014you will write a much better book. You will satisfy readers on a visceral level.
