Yes, it\u2019s a long title but, sadly, there\u2019s no other way to convey what this blog post is about.<\/span><\/p>\n

Death – A Loss that Cuts Deep<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s been a little over three months since my sister lost her battle with ovarian cancer. November 23, 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having her taken from me has cut deep, deeper than the losses of my parents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Please don\u2019t think me callous;<\/strong> I loved my parents and their deaths were tough to get through, but, after working through my grief those many years ago, I truly believed I was prepared to deal with another death should one come my way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Dyan\"<\/p>\n

However, nothing could have prepared me for the devastating blow I received when Dyan died.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That was her name; my sister \u2014 Dyan, named for the Greek goddess, Diana.<\/p>\n

Believe me when I write my sister was as brave as the Goddess herself<\/strong>, along with being my best friend, my biggest fan for my writing, and my muse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Depression \u2013 The Fourth and Most Debilitating Stage of Grief<\/h2>\n

In some ways it feels like years since I kissed Dyan goodbye.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Time stalled \u2014 frozen in a fog known as grief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was lost as to what was my reality,<\/strong> many days wandering aimlessly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"broken<\/a>I reached for my joyful memories of her but they seemed to have withered and turned to ash.<\/span><\/p>\n

The month of December passed in a blur, leaving me little time for writing, or feeling sad. I was busy, busy, busy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The death of a loved one has a tendency to do that.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are all kinds of detailed chores that require attention. Clothes that once graced the most beautiful woman I knew needed folding; books, graceful fingers had once touched needed sorting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Busy, busy, busy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then January came, as did a deep depression, and I embraced the darkness, slipping into my rabbit hole where the pieces of my soul lay scattered on the black earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Life could continue without me<\/strong>, my sister was gone, and I had no need to play in the light any longer.<\/span><\/p>\n

I spent my time crying, sleeping, crying myself to sleep, eating ice cream, and sleeping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I wanted my sister back and there wasn\u2019t enough CBD in the Universe that could help me. As far as writing went\u2026 screw it \u2014 I had lost my muse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in the Rabbit Hole\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

People told me to write. \u201cIt will help you get over your loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Why must death be something we need to get over?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, it\u2019s painful to grieve but just because the person we loved is gone doesn\u2019t mean our relationship with her, or him, ends?<\/p>\n

According to psychotherapist Julia Samuel<\/strong>, the author of\u00a0<\/span>Grief Works<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>This Too Shall Pass<\/span><\/i><\/a>, the first Pillar of Strength a grieving person must construct is the relationship with the deceased.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Samuel\u2019s writes that\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough we have to come to terms with the fact of their death, the relationship with the person who has died \u2013 though radically altered \u2013 continues. We love them in absence, rather than presence.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I worked through my grief, using K\u00fcbler-Ross\u2019s stages and Dr. Samuel\u2019s advice and thought I had achieved success. Heck, I had even written. (Yay, me.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By the time February arrived I was ready to re-enter the world with my spectral sister by my side and a\u00a0<\/strong>new found energy to once again be part of the human race.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Rabbit<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, surgery loomed and a much needed left hip sent me tumbling back into my rabbit hole of depression. Twenty-nine more days of hiding in my house with depression as my companion as we rode a pain-killer-enhanced emotional roller coaster.<\/span><\/p>\n

Write, Damn It!<\/h2>\n

March is now here and as I hobble around my yard, which, by the way, resembles a war zone thanks to all the leaves and sticks winter deposited on the lawn, I\u2019m reminded that life continues, despite the chaos that gets thrown at it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"life<\/a>For you see, life goes on, even when we don\u2019t want it to.\u00a0Like the plants returning to the surface in my gardens, I will find a way to gather the words I need to write my stories. I will do this for my sister. And for myself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lessons Death Taught Me\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

These are the lessons the death of my sister taught me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First and foremost,<\/strong> be gentle and kind to yourself because only you know what you need to feel better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next,<\/strong> don\u2019t let others tell you how to grieve. If you want to cry into a bowl of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, do it! If you want to scream, do it! Grieve your way and damn anyone who tells you it\u2019s wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third<\/strong>, grieve in your own timeline. Hit the stages of grief in any order you want and as many times as you want. There is no set amount of time we get to grieve when someone we loves dies. Take as long, or as little as you want. This is your journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fourth<\/strong>, keep plenty of ice cream in your freezer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Those<\/a>Lesson five<\/strong>, always remember that the person you lost isn\u2019t really lost; she or he will be waiting for you when you come out of the darkness.<\/span><\/p>\n

And, lastly, trust that you\u2019ll find your way back to whatever it is you need to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hey, Dyan, I\u2019m writing again!<\/span><\/p>\n
