But dialogue that is sodden and undistinguished (marshmallow dialogue) has the opposite effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro dialogue is compressed. Marshmallow dialogue is puffy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro dialogue has conflict. Marshmallow dialogue is overly sweet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro dialogue sounds different for each character. Marshmallow dialogue blends.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Example of Marshmallow Dialogue:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMary, are you angry with me?\u201d John asked.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re damn straight I\u2019m mad at you,\u201d Mary said.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut why? You\u2019ve got absolutely no reason to be!\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh but I do, I do. And you can see it in my face, can\u2019t you?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Example of Fixed Dialogue:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou angry with me?\u201d John asked.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDamn straight,\u201d Mary said.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou got no reason to be!\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary felt her hands curling into fists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem #2: Predictability<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Readers like to worry about characters in crisis. They want what\u2019s around the next corner (whether it\u2019s emotional or physical) to be a mystery. If a reader knows what\u2019s coming, and when it\u2019s going to happen, the worry factor is blown. Your novel no longer conveys a fictive dream but a dull ride down a familiar street.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem #3: Unrealistic Characters\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most impactful novels will bring a reader to tears or make them laugh out loud by conjuring an emotional bond between the reader and its characters. It is vital readers can understand the actions of your characters if you want them to believe in them and care about what happens to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>These aspects need to be involved when you\u2019re developing your characters.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural dialogue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clothing description<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mannerisms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personality<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical description<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The depth of a fictional character is best determined by the significance or type of role he or she has in the overall plot. You need to know all these aspects for your main character, but not as much or as deep for your secondary and tertiary characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem #4: Lack of Pacing\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During an entire novel, a variety of pacing is key. There should be peaks and troughs, periods of high intensity\/action punctuated by lulls in which the reader can absorb and digest them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem #5: No Sense of Setting\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all the attention you&#8217;re paying to move your plot forward and getting to your story&#8217;s next big set-piece, it&#8217;s often easy to overlook establishing the setting. A strong sense of place is essential for grounding your story and characters in the real world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>Example:<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nora Roberts, describing Ireland in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Dark Witch\u201d:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe <\/span><b>cold carved bone-deep<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fueled by the <\/span><b>lash of the wind, iced by the drowning rain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gushing from a <\/span><b>bloated sky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Such was Iona\u2019s welcome to <\/span><b>Ireland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She loved it. How could she not? She asked herself as she hugged her arms to her chest and drank in the <\/span><b>wild, soggy view<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from her window. She was standing <\/span><b>in a castle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She\u2019d sleep in a castle that night. An honest-to-God castle in <\/span><b>the heart of the west<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bolded words help the reader envision the place, social environment, and time of the story.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem #6: Lack of Conflict<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the center of every story is conflict &#8212; some disruption to your characters&#8217; status quo, an incident that needs reaction or resolution. Without this, your novel will likely lack a sense of purpose and drive, and quickly become boring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem #7: Unfocused Structure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the most significant reason manuscripts get rejected. You\u2019re telling a beautiful, powerful, gripping, complex story, but you\u2019re the only person who knows that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone else sees a long, rambling, uneven tale of various events happening to multiple characters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Every novel needs a focus.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s your point?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you want the reader to know?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>That focus is your Climax; the one part your story could not do without.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical example of structure in modern fiction is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.well-storied.com\/blog\/3-awesome-plot-structures-for-building-bestsellers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fichtean Curve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, involving moments of rising and falling action, a climax at the height of the curve and a resolution, may it be a happy ending or a tragedy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem #8: Weak Cause &amp; Effect\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can strengthen the narrative of your story by showing a logical progression of cause and effect, you\u2019ll end up with leaner prose, more honest character reactions, and more involved readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Editor\u2019s note:<\/strong> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What common problems in fiction writing do you see in your work or in others?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common problems In fiction writing can be fixed and you can learn how to fix yours.
