\u201cThis is actually a horribly written boring piece of literature\u2026stay away from this disgustingly overrated book and disgustingly bad writer\u201d. –\u00a0 Review of <\/span>Harry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone <\/i><\/b><\/a>by J.K. Rowling<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis collection of books is really, really terrible and boring, and I would(n\u2019t) wish the task of reading it on my worst enemy.\u201d – Review of <\/span>The Lord of the Rings<\/i><\/b><\/a>\u00a0by J.R.R. Tolkien<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to say the book has potential, but I don\u2019t think it did.\u201d \u2013 Review of <\/span>The Hunger Games<\/i><\/b><\/a>\u00a0by Suzanne Collins<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 the alien politics in the story were, at times, over analytical and complex. I would\u2019ve preferred a simpler approach.\u201d \u2013 Review of <\/span>An Alien Exchange<\/i><\/b><\/a>\u00a0by Keri Kruspe<\/span><\/p>\n

(Okay, I admit I\u2019ve given myself a bit of a cheap thrill putting my name up there with those distinguished authors. I actually <\/span>love<\/span><\/i> this critique\u2026I had no idea I was smart enough to write something \u201cover analytical and complex\u201d!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Endure the Pain of Reviews?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s face it. As a writer, we have to have reviews on our books to make a living. Reviews are the lifeblood of the industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to sell books, we have to have more than <\/span>ten<\/span><\/i> reviews for Amazon to even notice we\u2019re alive. Not to mention places like <\/span>BookBub<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 there you aren\u2019t going to get a coveted place in their ads without lots of reviews.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are Book Reviews?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The basic principle of book reviews is to help a reader decide whether or not they want to purchase\/read a book for themselves. A review shouldn\u2019t be a summary of the novel, just an overall <\/span>opinion <\/span><\/i>of the work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And, as you know, everyone has an opinion on just about everything. Why should books be different?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Show Me an Author Who Hasn\u2019t Gotten a Bad Review\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Isaac Asimov<\/span><\/a>\u00a0said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWriters fall into two groups: Those who bleed copiously and visibly at any bad review, and those who bleed copiously and secretly at any bad review.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I think what he was trying to say is \u201cjoin the club.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t believe me about authors getting a myriad of reviews, a great site to check out reviews of your favorite author is idreambook.com<\/a>. They have a collection of critics (i.e. <\/span>New York Times<\/span><\/i>) that rank the best-selling books according to the percentage of good reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, if you\u2019ve ever gotten a bad review, you\u2019re in good company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do We Really <\/span>Need<\/span><\/i> Bad Reviews?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I understand the question. But ask yourself this: Why do I write? Do you do it for yourself? Or do you want others to enjoy the fruits of your labor?<\/span><\/p>\n

I mean, holy crapoly\u2026being a published author is hard work!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We struggle for years learning our craft only to find out writing a novel is just the beginning of a lengthy process. We are constantly putting ourselves out there\u2026 in social media, blogs, websites, and author pages on numerous sites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why put ourselves through this torture?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

One answer is we write to gain reactions from others. We cross our fingers the reactions come back good. But then, you get hit with a \u201cbad\u201d review. You\u2019re being attacked and minimizing all the hard work you\u2019ve done (not to mention the expense!) to get your baby out in the world as you pray it grows and thrives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In response, I propose to you a different idea:<\/span><\/p>\n

Bad Reviews Sell Books\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"buying<\/a><\/p>\n

Huh? Say what? How is that possible?<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say you\u2019re browsing through your favorite digital site looking for your next favorite book. Ah, a cover and title catches your eye\u2026the blurb sounds great. But you\u2019ve never heard of this author, so you scroll down to look at the reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yep, there they are.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wait, they have nothing but five-star reviews. Gushing on and on how \u201cunputdownable\u201d the book is and that it\u2019s the greatest novel <\/span>ever<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, come on!<\/strong> People are diverse on <\/span>everything. <\/span><\/i>Folks can\u2019t even agree on what kind of ice cream is best. How is it <\/span>everyone <\/span><\/i>loves this book without fail?<\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds to me like this writer got all his friends and family to write a boatload of fanny-kissing reviews. Worse, it comes across as dishonest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now sprinkle in a couple of bad reviews.<\/strong> Wham, we\u2019ve got a dose of realistic legitimacy. The \u201cbad\u201d reviews actually balance out the \u201cgood\u201d ones. It gives a sense of genuineness to the work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perspective on Bad Reviews\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of my favorite quotes comes from Kurt Vonnegut about book reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAny reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let\u2019s look at it another way.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some people look for negative reviews to look for a book they\u2019d like to read. I\u2019ll use myself as an example. The worst review I\u2019ve gotten (so far\u2026) is for the second book in my trilogy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I personally don’t like there to not be returned karma for the ones who did all the torture, rape, or whatever. The reasons behind why the bad guy was not imprisoned and punished before now were stupid.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u2013 Review of <\/span>D\u2019zia\u2019s Dilemma<\/i><\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

I love this two-star review.<\/strong> I mean, come on! Why would I \u201cpunish\u201d the bad guy in the second book of a trilogy? That would be like Darth Vader facing justice in <\/span>The Empire Strikes<\/span><\/i> back instead of in <\/span>Return of the Jedi<\/span><\/i>. As a reader, I\u2019d love to know the action continues in the third book.<\/span><\/p>\n

There can be some quirks in bad reviews that nudge me to take a closer look:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201ctoo many ridiculous characters\u201d \u2013 yay! My favorite part of any book (or movie) are the secondary, quirky characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Any review with the word \u201cfeminist\u201d \u2013 since I write about \u201cfeisty heroines\u201d, this could wind up being my kind of book.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quick Tips to Handle Bad Reviews\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I came across this great article from <\/span>Indie Author News<\/span><\/a> on the best ways to react when you get a bad review:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Do nothing.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Do NOT respond (unless it\u2019s a simple \u201cthank you\u201d).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A bad review is still a review.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Re-read your good reviews.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Beware the Troll \u2013 Don\u2019t pour gasoline on the fire.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Ignore the bad review.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. It\u2019s not personal, it\u2019s business.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Don\u2019t rush to your favorite social media site.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Get tough skin.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Remember <\/span>why<\/span><\/i> you write.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The article also gives some fun (not to be taken as realistic) ways to deal with bad reviews:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Drink \u2013 heavily if need be.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Shop \u2013 for yourself\u2026not others!<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Respond to the reviewer why they are a douche-bag.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Use coercion, extortion, blackmail, or torture to make them take it down.<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Turnabout is fair play\u2026 give <\/span>them<\/span><\/i> a bad review.<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. Print it out and then burn it.<\/span><\/li>\n
    7. But\u2026most of all\u2026\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
