I\u2019d wake up with an idea, pound out a thousand words and hit publish after a cursory second read for typos. And then, I\u2019d go about my day. Without a second thought to what I\u2019d write about next, or when I\u2019d write it. Or what research I should do for future topics. Eventually, I\u2019d run out of ideas to write about and change the topic of my blog so I could write about something else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I blamed this on not knowing how to write well enough.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real culprit was my lack of organization, consistency and an editorial calendar.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is an Editorial Calendar?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An editorial calendar is a planner that tells you\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you will write;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when you will write;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who you will write for.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be as simple as a list or a handwritten calendar, or as complicated as a spreadsheet or an app.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some things to keep in mind:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no one size fits all when it comes to editorial calendars. What you use depends on your needs, the number of posts you write each day, week, or month, and the size of your team.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An editorial calendar gives you a place to jot down ideas, organize and develop them, and adjust them as you see how they\u2019ll work together.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0because I also use it for business. I have a board dedicated to my editorial plans. I have columns for each place I submit, current projects, editing, and next in line. If you write, more than one post a year, you need an editorial calendar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need it to plan your posts and articles out so you can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know what to write;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to write it;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan themes;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan series.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How Do I Make an Editorial Calendar?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/EditCalinfogr.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-22532\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/EditCalinfogr-120x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>It can seem daunting to plan what you will be writing six or twelve months from now, but once you get started you will find it flows much more fluidly than you thought it would.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Your first step is choosing how you will make it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You should consider your needs during this step.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people are on your team? You need a plan for how everyone will access the calendar, edit it, and move information through it. If it\u2019s just you, then your decision might be easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>You need to set your objectives for writing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Who are you writing for? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yourself or others? Or both?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>How often will you write?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Daily? Weekly? Monthly? (If you write for multiple people or places you may have different answers for each place.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Why are you writing?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To develop your name and visibility? For the joy of it? To make money? Some other reason?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>What resources do you have available? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An editor? A design consultant? Are you on your own? Take these into consideration when you\u2019re planning your schedule. The less help you have the more work you have to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>How will you make your content stand out <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the other 3,999,999 post published that day? This can be a compelling hook, great graphics, swaggy social sharing. Just make a plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve answered the questions above, you\u2019re ready to build your calendar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are a variety of ways to build it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Print out a calendar and pencil in ideas, set up a spreadsheet in Google Sheets, or use one of the amazing apps available such as Trello, which has a free version.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Track The Following\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you build your calendar keep in mind that you\u2019ll need to track the following;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publish date<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headline<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Author and Owner (if they\u2019re different)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Status of the post: idea, in process, needs editing, published, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Platform it will be published on and format if you publish more than text posts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you will distribute it, i.e., publishing but also sharing it after it\u2019s published<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any visual elements you will need or want for it<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEO, keywords, and hashtags<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">URLs as you find them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call To Action<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prompts you will use<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Now What?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once your calendar is set you are ready to get writing!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I usually plan my editorial calendar six months out.
