***<\/span><\/p>\n

The holidays are here and there\u2019s no better time to give.<\/strong><\/p>\n

All that giving is wonderful but don\u2019t forget yourself while you\u2019re handing out presents.<\/p>\n

Give yourself three gifts every writer needs,<\/strong> especially this time of year: Time, Peace, and Quiet.<\/p>\n

These three things will serve you well now and during the coming year. They fit perfectly and they\u2019re something you can really use!<\/p>\n

The writer\u2019s gift of time<\/h2>\n

First of all, give yourself the gift of time.<\/p>\n

Find a block of time every day to do nothing but write.<\/p>\n

I realize this is easier said than done.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Especially during the holidays it \u201cdon\u2019t come easy,\u201d as Ringo says in one of my favorite songs, so that\u2019s why it\u2019s a gift to yourself to take<\/i> the time, even when it looks like you have no time.<\/p>\n

You might not do it normally this time of year, but doing it anyway makes it a true gift.<\/p>\n

When you give gifts to other people,<\/strong> don\u2019t you like to give things a person might not buy for himself or herself?<\/p>\n

So if you commit to doing this \u2014you really are giving yourself a gift!<\/p>\n

The write\u2019s gift of peace<\/h2>\n

Next, give yourself the gift of peace.<\/p>\n

Stay peaceful instead of getting pushed and pulled by all the demands swirling around you.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t go into a freak-out trying to be everything to everyone.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re a writer<\/strong>, and as such, you have to keep your wits about you.<\/p>\n

Even when there\u2019s discord, noise, and people running everywhere, there must be material there for you to write about later.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re all caught up in the swirl<\/strong>, you\u2019ll miss it!<\/p>\n

Better to be peaceful and observe so that when you get your next block of time to write, you\u2019ll be calm and ready to roll with it.<\/p>\n

The writer\u2019s gift of rest<\/h2>\n

\"Rest\"<\/a>Lastly, give yourself the gift of rest.<\/p>\n

As you likely know very well,<\/strong> writers need rest and rejuvenation to create their fictional worlds. They also need time to daydream, and depriving yourself of that downtime is not doing you or anyone close to you any favors.<\/p>\n

I remember a film called The Muse<\/i><\/a>, where Sharon Stone, playing a muse to a Hollywood screenwriter played by Albert Brooks, would appear to share the greatest of ideas, but when Brooks got desperate and came to see her for added inspiration, she would cry that she needed her rest (and also a salad nicoise) to be at her best so that she could continue to impart her wonderful ideas.<\/p>\n

A tired muse is a very cranky muse indeed<\/strong>\u2014so don\u2019t let your inner muse get angry. Stop for a while. Take a nap. Sleep.<\/p>\n

Perhaps that dream you\u2019ll have will make for a great movie\/ novel\/ short story idea.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re too tired, that muse may leave and not come back for a while.<\/p>\n

So don\u2019t think that if you sleep you\u2019ll miss something;<\/strong> it\u2019s more likely if you don\u2019t sleep you\u2019ll miss something!<\/p>\n

Better that you should be rested and peaceful, having had your active writing time, than to be cranky, on edge, and burned out when everybody gets together to bake cookies, go shopping, cook holiday meals, and open presents. You gave yourself yours early. And aren\u2019t you glad you did!<\/p>\n
