Okay, so the other night I was getting ready for my NaNoWriMo session.<\/strong> I made a cup of chamomile tea, lit a pumpkin spice candle, had my dog curled up at my feet, and turned on the computer. What \"AC<\/a>I saw made my blood run cold.<\/p>\n

The AC power adapter was a Dell adapter. It came with my brand spanking new computer of only 45 days, for goodness sake, and<\/i> the plug was<\/i> inserted completely.<\/p>\n

Did I panic?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not me (she wrote with a smile on her face). I selected \u201cOK\u201d and waited.<\/p>\n

This is what I saw next.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"BitLocker<\/a>I promptly asked, Harlee, my black lab \u201cWhat the f#@% is a BitLocker recovery key?\u201d<\/p>\n

True to form, he didn\u2019t respond.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several attempts later, with the same results \u2014 What is the definition of insanity again? \u2014 I got my phone and researched BitLocker and this is what I found.<\/p>\n

BitLocker is a data encryption program residing within Windows 10. It\u2019s a Microsoft program and periodically will rear its ugly head and prevent a user from logging into a computer. It was designed to prevent hackers from gaining access to a person\u2019s computer. Unfortunately, for many, many, many honest users, BitLocker also prevents them<\/i> from gaining access to their own computer.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a little propaganda from Microsoft<\/strong>\"What<\/a><\/h2>\n

Excuse me for a moment while I fall on the floor laughing.<\/p>\n

The recovery key that is referenced in the dialogue box is a mystery. For some reason Microsoft assumes that the owner of the computer activated BitLocker but this isn\u2019t the case in soooooo many situations. I never set up BitLocker, nor did the thousands of people on the web who are complaining about the very same issue.<\/p>\n

But wait, here comes the best part.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Further playing around brought me to this screen. Want to guess which option worked?<\/p>\n

\"Choose<\/a>If you guessed Reset your PC you win the prize.<\/p>\n

Doing so, as I already knew, would remove all my files and programs, but what else could I do? My computer was hijacked!<\/p>\n

By now you\u2019re probably wondering about the outcome.<\/strong> Luckily, I had<\/i> backed up.<\/p>\n

Back up!<\/h2>\n

Sadly, I only had a backup of my work files. Unfortunately, I never backed up my computer\u2019s program.<\/p>\n

Yup, they\u2019re all gone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My writing programs, my editing programs, my video editing programs\u2026poof, like little wisps of smoke into the wind.<\/p>\n

Sure, I can reload them ALL as soon as I find the registration codes for each and every one of them. Argh!<\/p>\n

The moral of the story?<\/p>\n

\"Back<\/a>Back up.<\/b><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t just back up your files, backup your whole damn computer.<\/p>\n

Back up your programs, your programs\u2019 programs, your uncle\u2019s programs. Back up, back up, back up.<\/p>\n

Keep three copies of the backed up material.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One on your computer, one on a USB or external drive, and one in the cloud, for a rainy day.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re running Windows 10 (Goddess help you if you are), there is already a backup tool at your fingertips.<\/p>\n

However,<\/strong> I don\u2019t suggest you use it since the word on the street is that Microsoft is about to scrap the entire app and you\u2019ll be left twisting in the wind.<\/p>\n

Get yourself a couple of external drives, or one external drive and find a cloud storage site, and follow the instructions below.<\/p>\n

Creating a Backup Image on an External Drive
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. <\/b>Connect your external drive to your PC and open the Control Panel<\/b>.<\/li>\n
  2. <\/b> Click System and Security.<\/b><\/li>\n
  3. <\/b> Click Backup and Restore (Windows 7). <\/b>(It doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re in Windows 10, just roll with it.)<\/li>\n
  4. <\/b> Click Create a system image<\/b> in the left panel.<\/li>\n
  5. <\/b> Select On a hard disk<\/b> and click Next<\/b>.<\/li>\n
  6. <\/b> Click the Start backup <\/b>button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You\u2019re just created a system image of your entire computer, files and programs, and operating information. Good for you.<\/p>\n

    Don\u2019t start celebrating yet, though.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    To finish, you\u2019ll need to skip the step for the system repair disc and find a safe place to store your external hard drive.<\/p>\n

    Don\u2019t go too far with it, though. You\u2019ll want to backup your computer on a weekly (actually daily but I\u2019m just being paranoid at this point) basis.<\/p>\n

    Using Your System Image
    \n<\/b><\/h2>\n

    To restore your PC, open the Settings<\/b> app and go to Update & Security<\/b> > Recovery<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    In the Advanced startup<\/b> section, click the Restart now<\/b> button.<\/p>\n

    When your PC restarts, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Image Recovery<\/b> and follow the instructions to restore your PC using the system image on your external hard drive.<\/p>\n

    There you have it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Now you\u2019re protected and you can write to your little heart\u2019s content without worrying about the scary old Bitlocker monster.<\/p>\n
