Knowledge is power.<\/strong> So knowing why writer\u2019s block happens and how to get through it is a tool every author should have in their pencil box.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In writing communities writer\u2019s block is a feared but common word.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you took part in NaNoWriMo last month, or have a close friend who did, you probably heard the term tossed out with varying degrees of anger, fear and despair.<\/span><\/p>\n

Writer\u2019s block happens.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every writer will, at some point, face it. Their creativity will dry up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The characters in their heads will go silent. Or the blog posts they previously had no trouble creating will suddenly vanish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The most important thing to remember if this happens to you is:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know, that\u2019s easy to say and hard to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Writer\u2019s block seems to come on out of nowhere, leaving you overwhelmed, confused, and frightened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sitting down to write and finding you can\u2019t might leave you frightened. You may wonder if your writer\u2019s block will ever pass, or if it will return soon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Panicking will probably only make this worse.<\/strong> And you can skip the panic dance if you know why you are facing writer\u2019s block, and what to do about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I find the best cure for being frightened is knowledge. It might not stop me from being afraid, but I will, at least, understand what I\u2019m facing and maybe even devise some ways to deal with it. So let\u2019s discuss some causes and then some strategies to overcome writer\u2019s block.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Causes of Writer\u2019s Block<\/span><\/h2>\n

Jeff Goins<\/span><\/a>, successful author and blogger who has himself faced and beaten writer\u2019s block, discusses three possible reasons for writer\u2019s block, timing, fear, and perfectionism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are probably many more, but these are big ones, so let\u2019s talk about them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Timing\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Jeff Goins suggests that your idea might need more time to percolate. If you\u2019re working on a deadline, this might not be possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s still no need to panic.<\/strong> Sometimes giving yourself permission to daydream for a few minutes can be enough to get the words flowing through your fingers again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s a matter of recognizing that <\/span>your brain needs to switch gears<\/span><\/a> to be creative.\u00a0<\/span>We\u2019ll come back to this when we discuss solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fear<\/span><\/h3>\n

Fear is another cause of writer\u2019s block. It can be very frightening to think about other people reading your words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if you\u2019ve published other pieces you aren\u2019t immune to imposter syndrome. If <\/span>Neil Gaiman<\/span><\/a> faces it, don\u2019t be surprised that you do to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perfectionism<\/span><\/h3>\n

This is one that often gets me. You might feel that if you can\u2019t write it perfectly the first time, there\u2019s no point in writing it at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The truth is, very few authors publish the first draft of anything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Experienced authors might need less revision<\/strong>, but they still need revision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes we just need to recognize perfectionism for what it is and push through it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ivy Sheldo<\/span><\/a>n says \u201cinsights [authors] have gained from their failures helped shape them into the amazing writers we admire.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So be brave, let yourself risk failure and then learn from it and grow!<\/span><\/p>\n

Solutions to Overcome Writer\u2019s Block<\/span><\/h2>\n

Okay, so you know why you\u2019re suffering from writer\u2019s block. How do you beat it? How do you convince your brain it should be creative and make it write?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You don\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You don\u2019t like that answer. But it\u2019s honest. You can\u2019t force your brain to create if it can\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are, however<\/strong>, some things you can do to set your brain back on the right path and they are likely to get those creative juices flowing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are some very specific solutions listed in the articles I\u2019ve referenced. I will discuss solutions I\u2019ve used and work for me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My solution will depend on why I\u2019m feeling blocked and what I\u2019m trying to write.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If I\u2019m working on a blog post or article and struggling with where to start it or what angle I want to take, I know I need to do some research and learn more about the topic I\u2019m writing on. Enter my friend Google.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll research the topic more deeply<\/strong>, and read what other people have said about it, good and bad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a good practice anyway, you want to say something new, not just reword what others have said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If I can, I\u2019ll discuss the topic with someone, even my dog. (Smartest mutt in New Jersey!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My brain works better when I say things out loud.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

I can\u2019t tell you the number of times I\u2019ve asked a question I\u2019ve been puzzling over and come up with the answer before I\u2019m even done asking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next time you have a question<\/strong>, try asking it out loud before you search for the answer. You might find the answer in your head!<\/span><\/p>\n

If those steps don\u2019t get the words flowing, then I\u2019ll give myself a day or so to let it bounce around my head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I may or may not think about it during that time, but I never force myself to dwell on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s <\/span>strong evidence that your brain needs downtime<\/span><\/a> to recharge itself, and that downtime isn\u2019t wasted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We can\u2019t always choose the timing of what we need to write, but we can budget in enough time to breathe and give the piece we\u2019re writing time to grow.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

My solution for fiction is a little more fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

If I\u2019m working on a fiction piece and the words won\u2019t flow, I allow myself time to talk to my characters, daydream about them, and spend time with them. They are, after all, some of my favorite people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If that doesn\u2019t work<\/strong>, <\/span>I\u2019ll take a character out to lunch<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Usually the ones giving me the most backtalk, I mean trouble, and write an entirely unrelated scene for them. This usually helps me get in their heads and understand why they\u2019re resisting me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another method I\u2019ve used is writing scenes that occur \u201coff page.\u201d<\/b> These are usually inconsequential events that my reader doesn\u2019t need but will help me understand my world and how and why my characters relate to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most importantly, I remind myself that\u2019s it okay to be afraid, but it\u2019s not okay to let that fear stop me from being the writer I long to be.<\/b> Every word I type makes me better. And each revision teaches me a little more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Timing, Fear and Perfectionism, three possible causes of writer\u2019s block.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you think you\u2019re dealing with one of these, journal your thoughts about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve identified why you might have writer\u2019s block<\/strong>, give yourself permission to relax and try some solutions to break it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve discussed three I use, but the internet is full of ideas, writing prompts and groups where you can join sprints and get those words flowing again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be afraid to keep trying until you find the method that works best for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
