Inside my house it was dark and cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I seemed to be living every cliche a person could think of.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always walk my talk. It is one of my coaching strengths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I sincerely wanted to discover what would happen if I absolutely did what I always wanted to do with the full belief I could not fail.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The underlying promise of that question is if you really did go for it, then of course you would succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we want something badly enough, we should get it right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2pL8BwX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secret<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it all should work out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It did not work out. At all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would you do if you could not fail, but you failed anyway?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no rejoinder for a surprisingly bleak outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what to do when faced with massive truck loads of failure?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, wallow, look sad and explore new adult beverages. Once that is done, what happens next? Not much.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>That is the surprise.<\/strong> Failure doesn\u2019t carry any forward energy or momentum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no follow up to failure. There is regrouping, there is reevaluation, there is editing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some tears. There may even be lessons learned, which is another cliche &#8212; that we learn more from our failures than from our success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As if learning and not the absolute joy of success is the life goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Energy of Failure<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But back to the energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike a power outage, there are not many lasting effects of a failure. I know because I just did them all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to follow up with a publisher who just said your story isn\u2019t right for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to send thank yous to new students who thought your class would be life-changing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to troubleshoot and edit poems that are almost there and, can you fix line five before we publish?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Nothing. Crickets.<\/strong> The sound of expensive food slowly defrosting in the powerless freezer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those of us who were dragged through an educational system based on crime and punishment will remember that we were very much punished for failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was no such thing as experimental learning. There was no such thing as multiple tries to get to the right answer or even just arriving at the best answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We either delivered the right answer in the right order and earned a good grade or we didn\u2019t and we failed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twelve years of THAT and it\u2019s hard to shake the feeling that you are inferior, less than, stupid, for failing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Failure means nothing\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The irony? In the adult world there are no grades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Failure means nothing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the business\/creative world, failure doesn\u2019t carry much of a stigma at all.\u00a0 In fact, your friends don\u2019t care that you just failed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they care about is that you are involved in something interesting enough to discuss over a candlelight dinner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What your partner cares about is that you are involved in creating work you love so you wake up every morning happy, energized, and remembering where you left the flashlight light night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What PG &amp; E cares about . . . Well, PG &amp; E doesn\u2019t care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>That\u2019s why this cliche is a cliche.<\/strong> The question is a way of helping you and me escape our heads and throw out something new onto the page. It\u2019s a simple way to offer up space to experiment with new ideas and see what happens.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s all, just see what happens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it doesn\u2019t happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes the work isn\u2019t right for the time. Sometimes it was submitted to the wrong place. Sometimes it needs a tweak or edit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the service of intense work\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the thing: all that effort was not in the service of a big, grand success, it was in the service of intense work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our poetry, our novels, our presentations, our reports, they are all about the effort and the creation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s about playing in the zone. And that is worth, well, everything.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Creation is the win.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what the outcome, if you spent the week in the throes of\u00a0 passion, doing exactly what you love &#8211; success!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you run amok and do everything you ever wanted to do because you cannot fail. Do it. No one cares if you fail.
