I love to build puzzles. I love the challenge of sorting through a pile of mismatched shapes and colors\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and ultimately arriving at a cohesive image.<\/p>\n

Writing a story is very similar to building a puzzle.
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"Puzzle<\/a>Just as the picture on a puzzle box tells us what the puzzle will look like\u2026authors start with an image in their minds of what the story will be about.<\/p>\n

This is called the premise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"What<\/a>A premise is the \u201cWhat if?\u201d question.
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

See if you can figure out what stories I\u2019m referring to by these three premises.<\/p>\n

Hint: these are books, not movies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. What if a man, upon seeing an old photograph of a beautiful woman, travels back in time to meet her?<\/li>\n
  2. What if a young boy discovers he\u2019s a wizard and that there\u2019s a dark force trying to kill him?<\/li>\n
  3. What if an orphan boy was given a fortune by an unknown benefactor?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    No, I\u2019m not going to give you the answers, you\u2019ll have to do a little digging. Message me<\/a> when you think you know the book titles and I\u2019ll let you know if you\u2019re correct.<\/p>\n

    Opening the Box: Story Scenes
    \n<\/b><\/h2>\n

    \"Puzzle<\/a>Yup, your story\u2019s scenes are like puzzle pieces, and if you\u2019re a panster like me, they\u2019re all jumbled together into a pile of chaos in your brain.<\/p>\n

    Plotters? Well, their puzzle pieces are neatly arranged by color, shape, pattern, etc.<\/p>\n

    Oh, to be a plotter.<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n

    And just like the pieces to our puzzle, miss one or two scenes and you\u2019ll have holes in your story.<\/p>\n

    Too many scenes equals chaos
    \n<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Add too many scenes and you\u2019ll have chaos.<\/p>\n

    I recently read a newly published women\u2019s fiction novel by a very successful author whom shall remain nameless and found that while reading I could skip entire paragraphs and keep the thread of the story.<\/p>\n

    Truly,<\/strong> I didn\u2019t need to know the thread count of the sheets the character was sleeping on, or that she had to stop for gas on her way to her location.<\/p>\n

    Trust me, nothing happened at the gas station. Nothing! These scenes were used as filler to increase the book\u2019s word count.<\/p>\n

    Key Question to Ask About Each of Your Scenes
    \n<\/b><\/h2>\n

    In my next post I\u2019ll discuss the scenes that absolutely must be in your story.<\/p>\n

    For now, I want you to go through your manuscript and ask yourself this question for each and every scene in your story:<\/p>\n

    Does this scene propel the plot forward?<\/b><\/p>\n

    If you\u2019re not sure, place that scene aside.<\/p>\n

    If you think the story is easily told without the scene, even if the scene represents some of your best writing, remove it.<\/p>\n

    \"Alfred<\/a>Consider what Alfred Hitchcock is quoted as saying:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Cut out the dull bits and you\u2019ll have a smashing story, just like our puzzle when we don\u2019t try to force the extra pieces that make their way into the box.<\/p>\n
