You know how you seem to get these amazing ideas just as you\u2019re falling asleep or in the shower or taking an aimless walk \u2013 when your conscious mind is resting and your subconscious mind takes over (and you don\u2019t have anything to record your brilliance with)?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When You Need to Solve A Writing Problem<\/h2>\n

How about when you need to solve a writing problem? Do you give your conscious mind a chance to rest so your subconscious mind can kick into gear?<\/p>\n

The next time you\u2019re working on a piece of writing and run into a problem that is driving you nuts \u2013 something you just can\u2019t get a handle on \u2013 try this\u2026<\/p>\n

For Your Writing Problem: Take A Nap<\/h2>\n

Take a nap. Yes, really. Give your conscious mind a break.<\/p>\n

Last week, I had to write a new bio \u2013 one tiny paragraph \u2013 and had been struggling with it for far too long. I took a nap, got up, and wrote it. Done.<\/p>\n

Or Try This: Ask For The Answer<\/h2>\n

And I love this one…<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re struggling with a writing problem, before you go to bed for the night, ask for the answer.<\/p>\n

You may not get the answer on your first try, especially if you\u2019ve never done before, but try again. And again if you need to.<\/p>\n

You have a character whose motivation just isn\u2019t clear to you?<\/strong> Ask.<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t find the words to paint a picture of your story\u2019s setting? Ask.<\/p>\n

The structure of your piece just doesn\u2019t feel right, and you\u2019re not sure what to do? Ask.<\/p>\n

One Caveat
\n<\/b><\/h3>\n

You don\u2019t want to ask and then lie awake trying to hear an answer.<\/p>\n

You need to ask,<\/strong> casually, with no attachment to the outcome. You need to ask out of curiosity and then let it go.<\/p>\n

Your subconscious will take it from there.<\/p>\n
