It really is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>You\u2019ve spent countless hours carving out words on a page<\/strong>, sure they\u2019re infinitely amusing, informative, and deep, only to have someone read them and point out how they aren\u2019t all those things. Or maybe not say anything at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worse yet, when you are a new writer, that person is often someone close to you. Or a complete stranger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>I don\u2019t know which is worse<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the one hand, it\u2019s heartbreaking to have someone close to you not love what you wrote, though that\u2019s its own can of worms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, it might be harder to have a complete stranger reject your work because they have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no reason<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>For me<\/strong>, it was hardest to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there were flaws in what I wrote, and to hear my husband say he thought it was amazing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To this day, I don\u2019t know if he was lying to protect my feelings, or if his standards are just that low.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, here are my quick tips for finding critique and not letting it break your heart. (If you need to find a critique partner, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/school.bethbarany.com\/p\/how-to-find-critique-partners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beth Barany has a great course on how to do it!<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Types of Feedback<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some feedback is <\/span><b>emotional<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a visceral reaction to the words you pasted on a page. \u201cI loved this!\u201d or \u201cThis bored me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>This feedback tells you more about the entertainment value of your story and your audience.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional feedback can be difficult to hear, but even the negative feedback can be incredibly helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did they love it? Why? Even a poorly written story can entertain readers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did they hate it? Why? Was it the subject, style, or did they have trouble following the story? Did they happen to hate books about love triangles? (Or whatever your story is about.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did it bore them? Why? Was there not enough action or conflict?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Emotional Feedback<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional feedback can tell you that you might need to increase the conflict in your story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It can give you a sense of the audience your story is aimed at.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are writing a young adult vampire thriller, it might not be interesting to someone who prefers historical romance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Editorial Feedback<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some critique contains misspelled words and comma splices. This is helpful, but not when you are working to make your story as strong as it can possibly be. When I get grammar and spelling feedback, I note it and move on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also gently tell my critique partner or beta reader that I\u2019d prefer feedback on the story itself, and that I\u2019ll be hiring an editor to correct my terrible comma usage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If they continue to give me grammar and spelling feedback<\/strong>, I move on to find a new partner. I never complain to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ve spent valuable minutes, sometimes hours, reading my work and even if their feedback isn\u2019t what I was hoping for, I still appreciate it. And often this kind of feedback will at least be accompanied by an emotional response.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Story Mechanics Feedback<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last kind of feedback I\u2019d like to cover is the feedback we all think we want and then cry when we get it. (I\u2019ve cried too, and even told myself I shouldn\u2019t be a writer. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hang in there<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I\u2019ll talk about how to accept and grow from this kind of feedback!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes a critique will point out plot holes, inconsistencies, and weak characters. Sometimes your reader will tell you they don\u2019t find the events believable, or the way your character changes, or doesn\u2019t, isn\u2019t in line with the story your telling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This is, in my opinion, the hardest feedback to hear.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have beautiful story in your head that you\u2019ve painstakingly put to paper, and it doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even worse, if you want it to work, you need to dissect it, operate, remove the diseased parts, replace broken bits, and augment it, so it will work when you close it up again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one wants to hear that their story is broken and needs surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s an overwhelming task.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even the best writers have to return to their lovingly written manuscript and adjust it before they give it the breath of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to Handle Feedback<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve handed your lovingly written words over to a stranger, or a loved one. Either way it\u2019s not someone who loves that story the way you do. They haven\u2019t spent ages talking to your characters, getting to know them. And they\u2019ve given you feedback on your work.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you do?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you respond?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you ingest their feedback and let it help you grow into being a better writer?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>First, breathe.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then say, \u201cThank you for taking time to read my work. I appreciate your feedback.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>And then zip your lips!<\/strong> Don\u2019t say a word. About your book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, if they\u2019ve given you a document with feedback in it sit down and read it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recommend you set aside a time to do this when you won\u2019t be interrupted, if that\u2019s possible. Read it carefully, and with an open mind. Unless you hired a sadist to give you feedback, it\u2019s likely your reader isn\u2019t trying to eviscerate you with their thoughts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Third, put it, and your story, away for awhile.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I usually put mine away for a month or so. And don\u2019t talk about it!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If anyone asks, I say, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat story is in its resting period while I work on another work-in-progress. I find that helps me gain perspective on the feedback I\u2019ve gotten.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>And then I smile and change the subject<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Finally, when you\u2019ve given it some time,<\/strong> go back to it. Reread the feedback, sit back and think on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, after a rest I find the feedback much more helpful. And then I return to the outline and decide if I\u2019m going to change anything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, I decide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, I\u2019m the author of my story and I decide what gets changed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sometimes it\u2019s a big detail<\/strong>, like \u201cshe shouldn\u2019t be in love with that man, he\u2019s terrible!\u201d and sometimes it\u2019s a little thing, like \u201che is always saying \u2018umm\u2019\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the final draft, I make the decisions about how my story should sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you should too!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Feedback can be wonderful, frustrating, and painful, all at the same time.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But understanding where your reader is coming from and giving yourself a little perspective can make a lot of difference. It can help you discern the helpful from the unhelpful, the critical from the encouraging, and help you write a better story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best and worst feedback\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>One final thought.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best and worst feedback I got came from a stranger who offered to read my story in a beta readers group I was in on Facebook. She traded stories with me. I enjoyed her story a lot. And it was clear she was a good writer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Her feedback made me cry.<\/strong> It made me want to throw my computer at her, or at least through the window. It also helped my story grow the most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She pointed out where my storyline faded out. She pointed out weaknesses in my characterization that would never get past an editor. She made me think about the story I was telling and pushed me to tell a better one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I\u2019ve set that story aside for now.<\/strong> Sometimes you need to do that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes you just have so many ideas you know you\u2019ll never write them all. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll get back to it, it\u2019s very close to my heart, that story<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But for now, I need to spend time deciding how to tell it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you get feedback on your stories? How do you decide if it\u2019s helpful or not?
