One of the more difficult tasks for writers is managing the boring bits:<\/strong>\u00a0editing, especially editing that third draft, oh and copy editing, line editing, and well, any editing.\u00a0By the time I reach the third draft of a book, I\u2019m bored with the story, the premise, the characters, and my own brain.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, I\u2019d be quite happy if I never saw this book again.\u00a0And why do I need to publish it anyway?\u00a0Haven\u2019t I finished it?\u00a0Isn\u2019t it good enough?<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course<\/strong>, it\u2019s not good enough and to be finished, it needs my review as well as that of a professional copy editor.<\/span><\/p>\n

It must be done. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I could ask my long suffering spouse to keep me in line<\/strong>, asking the questions: Have you finished that draft?\u00a0Have you reviewed the already spell checked work?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But that puts him in an unfair lose\/lose position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I needed to create something that worked for me as well as working independently of any outside feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is my system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how I game these difficult tasks of editing and completing my book.<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"Calendar<\/a>It starts with a basic paper calendar: one month on a single page.<\/span><\/p>\n

On that calendar I\u00a0calculate when I want the project to be finished.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For this example:<\/strong> the end of the month.<\/span><\/p>\n

The manuscript is 239 pages.\u00a0I want to be finished at the end of the\u00a0month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A little math, and voila<\/strong> — my goal is to review and correct 12 pages a day to reach my end of the month finish deadline. I take weekends off.<\/span><\/p>\n

I mark off the total goal for each day: Monday, finish 12 pages.\u00a0Tuesday, reach 24 pages, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

How I Handle Overwhelm\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

I create these calendars whenever I\u2019m overwhelmed by a task.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Writing down the minimum number needed for success accomplishes the biggest challenge:<\/strong> starting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I create the calendar on the previous Thursday so it will be ready for the new week of dedicated responsible work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day one for the new program is Monday.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it\u2019s Thursday. A work day.\u00a0I take a look at my manuscript and can\u2019t resist.\u00a0I start editing.\u00a0I finish off ten pages on Thursday, and feeling pretty smug. Then I finish another 9 on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

By Monday, I\u2019m already ahead by 19 pages.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have now have two choices: call it a day on the first day, or keep going and blow out Monday\u2019s goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

I always choose to blow out Monday\u2019s goal.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even if I edit the established minimum pages, by the end of the day, Monday, I will have almost reached Wednesday\u2019s goal. I decide to reach Wednesday\u2019s goal. On Monday. I am stoked. I just overreached, I just succeeded beyond the requirements.<\/p>\n

I just cheated on my own game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

This is the gamification of required work.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

With Difficult Tasks Use Gamification<\/b><\/h2>\n

Sometimes I recalculate, and either reduce the number of pages I need to finish to reach the end of the month deadline, or I continue to do more than required. I work to exceed each day\u2019s deadline, racking up pages and points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This overachieving is exciting and satisfying for the whole week.<\/strong><\/p>\n

By week two, I\u2019m over it.<\/span><\/p>\n

To keep the momentum and motivation, I start moving the finish date.\"Calendar<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

But maybe finishing early is just that<\/strong>, finishing early.\u00a0Not terribly inspirational.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the difference between finishing on a Wednesday rather than a Friday?<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure,<\/strong> I\u2019ll be done with an onerous task, but if I\u2019m honest: whatever.<\/span><\/p>\n

To Keep the Game Moving, Use Incentives<\/b><\/h2>\n

To keep the game moving, I now invent incentives for early completion.<\/span><\/p>\n

What kind of reward will I earn if I finish the game early?<\/span><\/p>\n

I create rewards of escalating value.<\/strong> Finish a day ahead of the deadline: win\u00a0a new hardback book.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finish two days ahead of deadline: book a massage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finish a week ahead of the deadline?<\/strong> Day at the beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do not attach rewards to food or drink.<\/span><\/p>\n

Did I mention follow through for difficult tasks?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Did I mention\u00a0follow through?<\/span><\/p>\n

Follow through.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even when you finish early and the reward is a day at the beach, unless it\u2019s raining, go to the beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Your subconscious remembers everything and if you work yourself into a frenzy to reach a reward, then withhold that reward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The next time you\u00a0try this exercise, you\u2019ll meet with more resistance than a cat on a leash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be good to yourself and keep your own promises not just for the game, but forever.<\/strong><\/p>\n

May the odds ever be in your favor. <\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
