Welcome to the final installment in my three-part series on Goal, Motivation, and Conflict in your storytelling.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

So far you\u2019ve learned that a character\u2019s goal is the thing she or he plans on getting. Notice I didn\u2019t write what the character wants. <\/span>Wants<\/b> are desires. <\/span>Goals<\/b> are plans to achieve or gain something what your character desires. <\/span>Remember, goals are concrete<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say Amy buys a flower shop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amy\u2019s desire has always been to own a flower shop and now she does.<\/p><\/div>\n

After a character\u2019s goal, comes her <\/span>motivation<\/b>. Why did Amy buy the flower shop?<\/span><\/p>\n

\"What<\/a>

What force drove Amy to buy the flower shop?<\/p><\/div>\n

As with all character motivations<\/strong>, Amy\u2019s motivation has to make sense for the story. If she is allergic to flowers, buying a flower shop would be foolish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure you write motivations that drive the story and keep the reader engaged. (I wrote about character motivations here<\/a><\/span>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

On Writing Conflict: The Third Piece to the GMC Triad<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n

Next comes the third piece to the GMC triad: Conflict.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are the roadblocks you<\/strong>, the author, are going to throw in front of your character that will threaten to keep her from obtaining her goal or holding on to her goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, Amanda could open a flower shop across the street from Amy\u2019s and sells her flowers for half the price. Competition!<\/span><\/p>\n

Amanda sells flowers for half the price as Amy\u2019s. Bitch.<\/p><\/div>\n

According to Debra Dixon, author of\u00a0<\/span>GMC: Goal, Motivation, and Conflict, The Building Blocks of Good Fiction <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>Kindle<\/span><\/a>\/<\/span>Print<\/span><\/a>, conflict is why your character can\u2019t have, or hold on to, what she wants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cConflict is what makes a story worth reading.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Conflict is what makes a story worth reading. If Amy is happy-whappy with her flower shop and never has to work hard to keep it afloat, you don\u2019t have much of a story.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Life<\/a>

Life is good and Amy is happy. Boring!<\/p><\/div>\n

Without struggles and hardships, your story will lag, which is a nice way to state your story will be boring. Plant some land mines for your character to step on.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Writing Conflict: It Must Make Sense\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

As with motivations, your conflicts must make sense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For many new authors<\/strong>, adding conflict to a story is the most challenging part of writing because they never fleshed out the character\u2019s motivation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you know <\/span>why<\/b> your character is working to achieve a goal, you\u2019ll have a better handle on the types of conflicts you can use, and your readers will thank you by buying your books.<\/span><\/p>\n
