I only put the above 2 links in here since they are the ones I\u2019ve used and refer to.<\/p>\n<h2>Some Pros and Cons of Doing Amazon Ads<\/h2>\n<h3>Pros<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>No need to create a picture. The cover of your book is all you need.<\/li>\n<li>You are reaching people looking to buy a book.<\/li>\n<li>You pay for clicks and not impressions (think of the thousands of times people have seen your book and you didn\u2019t have to pay for it!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cons<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Some people don\u2019t like to shop on Amazon, so you\u2019re leaving out the rest of the world.<\/li>\n<li>You are competing with literally millions of titles.<\/li>\n<li>Be careful your book cover doesn\u2019t trigger their intervention system. (See next paragraph.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Compliance Warnings<\/h2>\n<p>Amazon is particular about the images and words used.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/advertising.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon Marketing Services (AMS for short)<\/a> won\u2019t advertise erotic products or glorify the use of illicit drugs, content seen as obscene, defamatory, lifeless, illegal, invasive of another\u2019s privacy or contains hate speech.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful of suggestive images. <a href=\"https:\/\/advertising.amazon.com\/resources\/ad-specs\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Refer to Amazon\u2019s guidelines and policies.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Ad Copy<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve only got so many words we can use (about 150 characters) so treat your words like gold. No obscene verbiage or swear words. Remember, children will see your ads!<\/p>\n<p>Also, they are particular when you use reviews, even if it\u2019s properly sourced (i.e. stating 15 five star reviews.) Leave out exclamation points in forcible pricing messages, like \u201cDon\u2019t miss out!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>About Keywords and Categories<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Get \u2018em.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AMS allows you up to 1,000 keywords in your ad. I did this by doing three things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>My personal library.<\/strong> If you\u2019re like me, an avid reader, I have hundreds of books I\u2019ve read both in book and ebook form. Because I like to do things the hard way, I created a spreadsheet years ago to list my books. I copied and pasted them all to use in my ad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amazon\u2019s bestseller list.<\/strong> A great resource to get names and see who is topping the charts in your genre to \u201cpiggyback\u201d on. The <a href=\"http:\/\/school.bethbarany.com\/courses\/enrolled\/branding-for-novelists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barany School of Fiction &#8220;Branding for Novelists&#8221; course<\/a>\u00a0is a great resource in how to do this.<\/li>\n<li>Buy <a href=\"https:\/\/publisherrocket.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KDP Rocket (now called Publisher Rocket)<\/a>. It does all the hard work in looking for viable keywords and categories for you. You can always increase if you\u2019d like later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Targeting:<\/strong> I do my own manual targeting. You can only do one at a time.<\/p>\n<p><em>An interesting side note:<\/em> I was worried my paperback wasn\u2019t selling, so I used the same ad to promote both books &#8212; the only difference was the form the book came in.<\/p>\n<p>My ebook ad took off while my print book didn\u2019t do a thing. Needless to say, I cancelled my book ad. If you\u2019ll notice after the first one, it states any campaign before April 22 used this, which I did. I haven\u2019t tested the other two, so I have no experience to share with you.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Default bid<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Put in whatever amount you feel comfortable with. The reason I say this is I like to go in and individually adjust each keyword I\u2019ve put in. Yes, that\u2019s a pain in the-you-know-what and can take some time.<\/p>\n<p>This is new. Where it states \u201csuggested bid,\u201d I\u2019ll consider where I want my keyword bid.<\/p>\n<p>For the first one, I\u2019d probably change it to somewhere between the suggestion of $0.34 and $0.69. Here\u2019s where knowing your genre comes in handy.<\/p>\n<p>If this author is someone I like and know is popular, I\u2019d up the bid.<\/p>\n<p>According to these suggested bids, I would lower both from $0.75 to something else. I go through all of my keywords and analyze each one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next comes the optional negative words:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image-13.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21546 size-full\" title=\"Image for Negative Keywords (Amazon Ads)\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image-13.png\" alt=\"Image for Negative Keywords (Amazon Ads)\" width=\"396\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image-13.png 396w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image-13-300x162.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I suggest putting in any words that don\u2019t represent your genre and that you don\u2019t want to waste money on.<\/p>\n<p><em>Examples for me:<\/em>\u00a0children\u2019s books, teen, free, ya, or clean and wholesome.<\/p>\n<h3>Amazon Ad Custom Text<\/h3>\n<p><strong>And last, but not least<\/strong>\u2026here\u2019s where you put in your ad custom text.<\/p>\n<p>Nice thing about this screen is you can see what your ad will look like.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image-14.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21547 size-full\" title=\"Image for Custom text (Amazon ads)\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image-14.png\" alt=\"Image for Custom text (Amazon ads)\" width=\"624\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image-14.png 624w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image-14-300x184.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you are happy with your text, just hit the <strong>Launch Campaign button<\/strong> and wait for Amazon to let you know if your ad has been approved or not. (<em>Editor&#8217;s note:<\/em> this takes about 24 hours.)<\/p>\n<h2>Check Your Ad A Few Times A Week<\/h2>\n<p><strong>One parting piece of advice:<\/strong> Do not set your ad and forget about it. Check it a couple of times a week to see if it\u2019s working for you.<\/p>\n<h3>Make adjustments<\/h3>\n<p>Make adjustments (i.e. add or delete keywords) or increase\/decrease your bids.
