Anyway, that scene marks the point in the movie when Luke embarks on a new journey. It is the inciting incident for the story.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-20777\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Luke-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" \/><br \/>\nSimply defined, an inciting incident is the point in the story where the protagonist\u2019s world changes in a dramatic way. It\u2019s the &#8220;ah-ha&#8221; moment when the MC must decide between the status quo and embarking on a new journey, such as joining the resistance to fight the Empire.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20779 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Luke-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>Inciting incidents can be positive and they can be negative, <\/strong>but it must present the hero\/heroine with a new goal; one they can\u2019t walk away from. If Luke had walked away from what the Empire had done to his family he would be turning his back on all he was raised to believe and that\u2019s wouldn\u2019t have been an easy thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>Many newbie authors believe inciting incidents need to be the first thing to happen in a story but that\u2019s not the case. In fact, stories are more meaningful when we\u2019re given a chance to get to know the MC\u2019s everyday life before we see them thrust into the arena. The key is, however, that the I. I. has to occur before the end of Act I.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make the I.<\/strong>\u00a0I. stand out a writer must present a dilemma that the protagonist has to struggle with before accepting the call to action. <strong>What moral and emotional issues present themselves that the main character (MC) rebels against?<\/strong> If the character accepts his\/her new path too easily, the story will falter and the reader may lose interest.<\/p>\n<h2>EXAMPLE FROM HARRY POTTER<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-20780\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Harry-Potter-300x125.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"125\" \/>Let\u2019s look at a familiar story by the renowned J.K. Rowling,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2FG4OHe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone<\/a>. Can you guess the inciting incident?<\/p>\n<p>No, it\u2019s not when He Who Shall Not Be Named kills Harry\u2019s mother and father. It\u2019s not even the point where the letter arrives from Hogwarts and Harry\u2019s uncle won\u2019t let him have it. Think about it,<\/p>\n<p>Harry could easily walk away at that point and not care about the letter. The I. I. is when Hagrid shows up at the lighthouse and announces that Harry\u2019s a wizard. From that point onward Harry\u2019s life is never the same.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re planning your next story, be mindful to your I. I. and it\u2019s placement. Most writing coaches will tell you not to use backstory to present the inciting incident and I agree. Although I don\u2019t have a problem reading backstory during Act I, I\u2019d rather the inciting incident be real in that I get to\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20781 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Hunger-Games.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"148\" \/>experience the situation with the protagonist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Admit it,<\/strong> you\u2019d rather race forward with <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2TUQ5w7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katniss<\/a> to save her sister than have Katniss think about how she took her sister\u2019s place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use your inciting incident to drive your story forward by giving your protagonist a reason to act outside his\/her comfort zone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20782 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Fishbowl-2-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Without inciting incidents, your stories will flounder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I hope you enjoyed this article on inciting incidents; <\/strong>please leave a comment if you did, or didn\u2019t.
