Novels clock in around 50,000 to 100,000 words while a synopsis can range from 500 to 1,500. Easy, cheesy. I just have to hack at my manuscript until all that\u2019s left isn\u2019t the bare bones of the story but fragments of what once were the bare bones of the story and then grind those fragments up into tiny shards, grind some more, and, bingo, I\u2019ll have a synopsis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20611 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tc2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tc2.png 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tc2-160x160.png 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Give me a minute, will you? I seem to have stopped breathing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Okay, Phew, much better. Back to writing a synopsis.<\/strong> Before we can begin writing a synopsis we need to understand the reason for writing one. A synopsis is used to present a written account of a story plot AND reveal the emotional ARC(s) of the main character(s) without all the extra verbiage found in a novel. No dialogue, no back stories, no inner thoughts, no sex scenes; just the facts. Easy, cheesy, squeezy.<\/p>\n<p>After doing some, and I mean SOME like in a ton of research (I\u2019ve linked to a few of the best articles at the end of this post.), I\u2019ve managed to come up with my top 11 list of what to do and not to do when writing a synopsis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20612 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tc3-300x177.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Sorry, wrong list.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Rules for Writing a Synopsis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #1<br \/>\nA synopsis must be written in third person, regardless of the POV used in the story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #2<br \/>\nWrite clearly and concisely in your own voice. Your synopsis has two purposes, to sell your book and you!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #3<br \/>\nCharacter\u2019s names should be typed in all caps and bold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #4<br \/>\n&lt;Always provide a setting. Stories don\u2019t exist in black holes and your synopsis shouldn\u2019t either.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #5<br \/>\nAlways reveal, in the first paragraph, the status quo for your MC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #6<br \/>\nIf you have two MC\u2019s, offer two opening paragraphs, each with the MC\u2019s status quo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #7<br \/>\nAlways reveal the character\u2019s main goal(s).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #8<br \/>\nOffer a summary for each act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #9<br \/>\nDon\u2019t spend valuable words trying to explain the story\u2019s themes and backstories, and avoid dialogue. Also, and this is important: tell, don\u2019t show!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #10<br \/>\nAvoid wordiness.\u00a0 Mary carried the steaming, hot mug of dark chocolate hot chocolate into the cozy study where she would wait until early morning for Jeff, her one true love, to call to announce he\u2019d arrived safely in the balmy heat of Jamaica, becomes\u2026Mary waited until early morning for Jeff\u2019s call. (Thank you Jane Friedman for this wonderful tidbit of guidance.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rule #11<br \/>\nAlways reveal the ending; no cliffhangers allowed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20613 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tc4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Don\u2019t get stressed out. Relax, we got this!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, there are more than 11 rules. A lot more! But, for now, I\u2019ll stick with these 11.<\/p>\n<p>Did I mention the beginning of the synopsis? Nope! Sigh, now there are 12 rules. Rule #12: Avoid cute beginnings such as Once upon a time\u2026 or In a land, far, far away\u2026 or It was a dark and stormy night\u2026 I\u2019m sure you get the picture. Begin with your log-line; that one sentence elevator pitch that you\u2019ve rehearsed until you can recite it backwards. What? You don\u2019t have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywritingtips.com\/whats-your-novels-log-line\/\">log-line<\/a>? No worries, by the time you\u2019re finished with the draft for your synopsis, you will!<\/p>\n<p>The first paragraph should always introduce the character(s). I guess that makes this Rule #13. If you have two MCs, you\u2019ll need two intro paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p>Here are my rough, and I\u2019m stressing the word\u00a0<em>rough<\/em>, opening paragraphs for the synopsis I\u2019m working on for my newest book,\u00a0<em>Breaking the Rules<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>SHANNON MULLER<\/strong>\u00a0wasn\u2019t looking for love. She wasn\u2019t even looking for sex. She was looking for a way out of her emotionally abusive marriage. A way she was sure she\u2019d discover once she found her courage. Not an easy thing to do, especially when her mother\u2019s words dog her every waking moment. \u2018The Muller women need someone to take care of us.\u2019 Even if she could silence her mother\u2019s proclamation, she still had to find a way to escape the clutches of her gas-lighting prick of a husband. And build a new life for herself and six-year-old son. (more to come)<\/p>\n<p><strong>ADAM ST. JOHN<\/strong>\u00a0has rules. A lot of them. All created with one goal in mind: To protect himself from disappointment and heartache. With three divorces under his belt, he doesn\u2019t need the problems that come with relationships. After all, love is just an excuse people use to inflict pain. But they do show the character\u2019s names in all caps and each character has her\/his own paragraph. At least I\u2019m heading in the right direction.
