If you ever shifted your opinion, why did you? And how did that decision shift your world view or how you lived your life?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tipping Points: Overcoming Misbeliefs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writerunboxed.com\/2018\/11\/06\/tipping-points-and-also-vote\/#more-55856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Therese Walsh<\/a> calls the moment when your character changes her mind or her world view\u2014when she\u2019s <em>forced<\/em> to change her mind\u2014a \u201ctipping point.\u201d Exploring your characters\u2019 tipping points enriches your characterizations and your story, because your protagonists (or maybe antagonists) overcome misbeliefs by going to their limits\u2014and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it take to make your character change not just her mind?<\/strong> And why would she? And where does it take her?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The World View at the Start<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Start at the beginning. What is your protagonist\u2019s world view at the beginning of your story?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What won\u2019t she do?<\/li>\n<li>What won\u2019t she say?<\/li>\n<li>Whom would she never betray?<\/li>\n<li>What or whom does she trust implicitly?<\/li>\n<li>What or whom would she give up to achieve her greatest desire?<\/li>\n<li>For whom or what would she make significant sacrifices, even lay down her life?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Leaving the Comfort Zone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now, in each instance, what would it take for her to change her mind? To be pushed out of her comfort zone? That\u2019s the tipping point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s look at the first bullet point.<\/strong> Let\u2019s say that your character thinks that the one thing she\u2019d never do is kill another human being. What would have to happen for that viewpoint to change? Maybe she\u2019s under attack, and the villain is shooting at her. Maybe someone kidnaps her child, and she tracks him down, to discover that the child has been assaulted. Maybe you\u2019re writing a wartime scenario. If your character is a conscientious objector, what would make her take that step to kill?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Forces of Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you can\u2019t imagine that your protagonist would ever leave her original character behind, think about the steps\u2014the people, events, or accidents\u2014that would take her to that difficult place. Consider the effect of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lies<\/li>\n<li>Liars<\/li>\n<li>Injustice<\/li>\n<li>Insecurity<\/li>\n<li>Corrupt forces<\/li>\n<li>Threats to her future<\/li>\n<li>Threats to those she loves<\/li>\n<li>Threats to things she loves<\/li>\n<li>Disempowerment<\/li>\n<li>Abandonment<\/li>\n<li>Victimization<\/li>\n<li>Brainwashing<\/li>\n<li>Addiction<\/li>\n<li>Poverty<\/li>\n<li>Cruelty<\/li>\n<li>Hatred<\/li>\n<li>Illness<\/li>\n<li>Abuse<\/li>\n<li>Chaos<\/li>\n<li>Pain<\/li>\n<li>Fear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Any of these, when taken to extreme<\/strong>, could push your character to a tipping point. Think how she would respond if these things came from someone or something she trusts or trusted. Or if she realizes that she\u2019s been manipulated to act against her own best interests. How would she receive this information, and how hard would she resist it?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dare to Struggle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You want your character to struggle as the stakes rise. Consider these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What can\u2019t she ignore?<\/li>\n<li>What has she already compromised or sacrificed?<\/li>\n<li>Whom has she already lost?<\/li>\n<li>How has she lied to herself?<\/li>\n<li>How many voices will she dismiss as crazy before something finally nudges her conscience, makes her wonder?<\/li>\n<li>What will she do with that blast of enlightenment once she sees the truth?<\/li>\n<li>How does that redirected energy fuel her arc?<\/li>\n<li>What will she lose or gain by accepting the truth?<\/li>\n<li>How will reaching a tipping point change her?<\/li>\n<li>Is this tipping point only the first in a series?<\/li>\n<li>What comes next?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Tipping Points for Unpleasant People<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Because conflict fuels story, tipping points tend to come from difficult pressure points\u2014pain, loss, injustice\u2014on characters we identify with. But <em>positive<\/em> pressure points\u2014joy, compassion, truth\u2014can trigger tipping points for unpleasant protagonists or even antagonists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example,<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2DalF3H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A Christmas Carol<\/em><\/a>, Scrooge is motivated to leave his \u201ccomfort zone\u201d of selfishness, distrust, and cruelty through positive qualities of joy and love. And in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2PkDa8E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A Man Called Ove<\/em><\/a>, the protagonist begins as a grouchy old guy whose demeanor is explained by a history of insecurity, pain, and chaos. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2SXd3TB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darth Vader<\/a> is an antagonist who travels a road of change.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Maximize the Shift<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Reaching a tipping point is a dramatic turn of events, so don\u2019t make your character\u2019s change of nature too easy, or it won\u2019t ring true. That said, finding a tipping point for your character is a powerful way to change up your story, give your characters new challenges, and up the stakes.
