I was really excited for my second session with Writing Coach, Beth Barany. <\/strong><\/p>\n

So much to ask\u2026so little time! Okay\u2026okay focus. Um, last time we went over my website. Got that done, but\u2026I wanted to know what was next for me as an author getting ready to plunge into the world of publishing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, first things first.<\/strong> You gotta know where you\u2019ve been to know where you\u2019re going. So let\u2019s see what have I accomplished to have my trilogy published? <\/span><\/p>\n

I hate to admit it, but I\u2019m going to have to revise my initial wish of publishing all three books at the same time. The editing isn\u2019t finished on the second and third books.<\/span><\/p>\n

(Heck, no one but me has even seen the third book yet. I just finished my first run-through and I have to do it at least three more times before I send it to my beta readers). <\/span><\/p>\n

The second book is with the\u00a0<\/strong>copy-editor<\/b>, and I won\u2019t get that back until the beginning of October. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hum\u2026maybe I can launch them thirty days apart\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Having said that, what else have I done? <\/span><\/p>\n

Website<\/span><\/h2>\n

For the website<\/a>, I opened a new Facebook author account<\/a>\u00a0and a Twitter author account<\/a>\u00a0. I already had a Goodreads account<\/a>, so I didn\u2019t have to do anything different there. I tried to hook them up to the website myself\u2026but got stuck. So I asked my \u201cvirtual assistant\u201d for help and she\u2019s going to take care of that for me. Whew!<\/span><\/p>\n

Book Description\/Author Bio<\/span><\/h2>\n

With the help from Beth\u2019s Barany School of Fiction<\/a>, I\u2019ve already created my <\/span>book description<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and author bio. Beth suggested I draft short versions of my bio and book blurb: 10 words, 25 words, and 50 words, for review in our next group coaching session. We\u2019ll also review my keywords and categories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Book Covers<\/span><\/h2>\n

The covers of my books are ready to go. I hired out for that (and got a discount of 15% due to requesting three at once.) I knew I couldn\u2019t scrimp on two important things\u2026editing and book covers. I\u2019m thinking of having them available for print, but my designer asked me some questions that I had to ask Beth. (I always thought it was one size\/color fits all\u2026) <\/span><\/p>\n

Cream or white paper? 5×8 or 5.85 or 6×9?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beth said that <\/span>white paper signals to the reader the book is nonfiction and cream is for the escape into fiction. Her recommendation is to go with cream and book size: 5×8 inches. <\/span><\/p>\n

She also said, \u201cKDP print will ask if you want a glossy or matte cover. A lot of nonfiction is glossy, whereas fiction is often matte.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Publishing Name<\/span><\/h2>\n

I went ahead and created my company, <\/span>StarChance Productions <\/span><\/i>(StarChance is the name of the main space ship in my trilogy). I decided to start with a DBA (Doing Business As) for now. I\u2019ll wait to incorporate later when my publishing life takes off. I don\u2019t have a logo yet\u2026something to work on.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beth suggested I <\/span>check with my cover designer, that she might be able to create something for me. She recommend I have the logo in color as well as black and white so I can have it in different formats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Formatting<\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u2019ve been confused about the whole formatting thing. I\u2019ve seen some authors panic and some shrug like it\u2019s not a big deal. And more importantly how long would it would take if I did the formatting myself?<\/span><\/p>\n

Beth reminded me to check out her course <\/strong>in the school<\/strong>, \u201cSelf-Publishing E-Books for Indie Authors<\/a>.\u201d She said that the great thing about these companies [like Draft2Digital or KDP] is you can upload your book in a few hours (or less) and muck around all you want. She assured me that I could can see how the portals work without any damage to the book files.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best day to publish\/launch?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Beth said: <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201c[It] depends on what your focus is. Are you trying to get a whole lot of sales or are you willing to let it build? To be honest, it really doesn\u2019t matter. Pick a day you feel good about because that is the day you\u2019re going to [work towards] having everything ready for. Everything on KDP or even Draft2Digital will stay as a draft until you hit that \u201cpublish\u201d button.\u201d
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Pre-Launch
\n<\/span><\/h2>\n

We dived deeper into the pre-launch idea.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beth said that<\/span> \u201ca pre-launch for a first book doesn\u2019t make sense. It\u2019s hard for everyone to get excited about something they\u2019ve never seen. Excitement won\u2019t build until the second or third book. By then you\u2019ll be able to do a successful pre-launch. This way, you\u2019re working in beautiful, safe anonymity. Nobody is waiting, so you can move your deadline to whenever you want.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Blockchain publishing intrigues me… <\/strong><\/p>\n

Beth shared that blockchain is different than the <\/span>normal channels that people understand. No one is going to know what I\u2019m talking about. She recommended I stick to the Indie thing first and then work my way into blockchain, since it will introduce my books to a different kind of audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusions, Or The Adventure Never Ends<\/span><\/h2>\n

After our session, I realized I was missing something. All this information is great, but how does it fit into my overall strategy as a writer? What do I want my new career to look like? Am I in this for the long or the short term?<\/span><\/p>\n

In our next session,<\/strong> I\u2019d like to go over the pros and cons of each strategy: 1. First book priced and exclusive to Amazon \u2013or- 2. First book priced and available everywhere \u2013or 3. First book <\/span>free <\/span><\/i>and available everywhere. <\/span>Hum\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
