Session One \u2013 The Website:<\/strong> Beth Barany\/Keri Kruspe on Tuesday, August 14th 2018<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, what a tangled web(site) we weave,\u201d not to deceive\u2026.but creating a website is daunting, confusing, and downright scary. <\/span><\/p>\n

Especially for those of us who are \u201ctechnologically challenged\u201d or \u201cTC\u201d for short. <\/strong><\/p>\n

As an aspiring, non-published writer, one of the first things I\u2019ve learned is you must have a website to strengthen your aspirations to become a successful writer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d you may ask.<\/strong> \u201cAll I want to do is write! I\u2019ll just put it on Amazon (or iTunes or Barnes and Noble, or\u2026.you fill in the blank), and sell my books there. I don\u2019t need a website for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, maybe that\u2019ll work for you, but the question is, what about your readers? <\/span><\/h2>\n

See, your website is for your readers\u2026.your \u201cfans,\u201d once you\u2019ve cultivated them. They need a place to connect with you (the writer of the worlds they love to visit) and discover what <\/span>you<\/span><\/i> are doing. It\u2019s a place you can announce to them about your next book coming out. A \u201cheads up\u201d place so they know months in advance when they can indulge again. A place where they can connect, not only with you, but with others who enjoy the same thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the flip side<\/strong>, you have a great tool for your business. As a business owner (and yes, this is a business) you must take control, particularly if you will be an independent author. <\/span><\/p>\n

Your website will house an invaluable key to your success: your mailing list. <\/span><\/p>\n

Amazon may abandon publishing\u2026Barnes & Noble may close\u2026.and iTunes may return to music. <\/span><\/h2>\n

While none or any of these things may happen, why take a chance? <\/span><\/p>\n

With your own mailing list<\/strong>, it wouldn\u2019t matter if your venue of choice goes belly-up and deserts you. You will continue to have a viable means of keeping your writing dreams alive. It will be in your hands, not subjected to the whims of others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, having said all that, how to get started on your website?<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re lucky enough to know how to create and maintain your own domain, God love ya \u2018cause you\u2019re ahead of the game. <\/span><\/p>\n

For those of us who are \u201cTC,\u201d<\/strong> (technically challenged), it can be an overwhelming task. And being on a limited budget doesn\u2019t help. <\/span><\/p>\n

So, I took a class from Romance Writers Association<\/a> chapter (RWA), of which I\u2019m a member, to learn how to create and put up a website through WordPress. <\/span><\/p>\n

I was afraid that, because I suffer from \u201cTC,\u201d I could only go so far.<\/span><\/h2>\n

I asked around (personally and on various Facebook pages) and finally broke down and hired someone to \u201ctweak\u201d it for me. <\/span><\/p>\n

Let me tell you it wasn\u2019t cheap.<\/strong> But still, was the site ready to go? Was the layout, themes and colors right for my genre? <\/span><\/p>\n

The only way to know for sure was to ask an expert. So who did I go to? That\u2019s right, I asked my writing coach, Beth Barany. <\/span><\/p>\n

You know, that <\/i><\/strong>Beth Barany<\/strong>, of Barany\u2019s School of Fiction<\/a>. On August 14<\/span>th<\/span> of this year, Beth sat down with me to go over my site and give me some invaluable advice. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a brief overview of the important suggestions she gave me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Self-Hosting<\/span><\/h2>\n

As I mentioned, I used WordPress for my site, but that\u2019s only half the story. You need a \u201chost\u201d to run that site (I went with Bluehost<\/a>) This host gives you a lot of flexibility to make changes. It allows you to customize the design for your site.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tagline<\/span><\/h2>\n

Your brand, a one-sentence statement of who you are is splashed across the home page. My tag line is \u201cAuthor of Otherworldly Romantic Adventures.\u201d Hopefully from that, you\u2019ll be able to guess what I write.<\/span><\/p>\n

Colors<\/span><\/h2>\n

The colors have to be eye catching and pleasing. Beth loved the overall color of my page but got stuck on the \u201cblue\u201d accents. I\u2019m not sure if I finally found the right shade, but I can go in anytime and play with it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigation Buttons <\/span><\/h2>\n

The buttons on the first page read, \u201cHome,\u201d \u201cBooks,\u201d \u201cBlog,\u201d \u201cAbout\u201d and \u201cContact Us.\u201d She thought they were great since we don\u2019t want to give too many choices. But, some customization was needed. So I changed the last two. The button \u201cAbout\u201d changed to \u201cAbout Keri,\u201d to make it a little more personal. \u201cContact Us\u201d changed to \u201cContact Keri.\u201d She reminded me the page was for my readers and they might want to contact me and write me some fan mail. (Eek!)<\/span><\/p>\n

Call to Action<\/span><\/h2>\n

At the bottom of the page is my \u201ccall to action\u201d that encourages visitors to sign up for my mailing list. After looking at the layout, Beth had some suggestions. The top should be my \u201chook.\u201d (Here, I asked the reader a \u201cwhat if\u201d question.) Then the covers of my upcoming books are displayed in their magnificent glory. Below the books, I ask, \u201cWant to know when you can find out\u2026\u201d and below that question, I simply invite people to my mailing list. There they can do it by pressing the red \u201cSubscribe Now\u201d button. Easy, peasy!<\/span><\/p>\n

Test Run<\/span><\/h2>\n

Here Beth clicked the subscribe button so we could see in real time what happened. The person who tweaked my site put in a \u201cMailChimp\u201d plugin. MailChimp is an automated email platform that helps keep track of campaigns. I\u2019m happy to say, Beth is now on my mailing list!<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n

So, where am I now? Well, after our conversation, I\u2019m happy (scared) to say my website is live. I can\u2019t tell you how nervous it made me to hit that \u201cpublished\u201d button and let it loose into the world. But, nothing catastrophic happened and I feel better about my site after getting Beth\u2019s help. <\/span><\/p>\n

My advice:<\/strong> Don\u2019t let the fear of being \u201ctangled\u201d up in something prevent you from letting your creative self out into the world. Your writing dreams <\/span>are<\/span><\/i> worth sharing.<\/span><\/p>\n
