\"\"<\/a>You may have heard of the new European Union law, GDPR<\/strong> (GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION), coming into effect May 25, 2018.<\/p>\n

If not, you do need to pay attention if you have (or want) an email list communicating with your readers.<\/p>\n

WHAT IS GDPR?<\/h2>\n

If you do have a mailing list for readers, chances are you have readers who live in the European Union<\/a>. So you do need to pay attention to this data protection and privacy law. It will impact you.<\/p>\n

GDPR will have an impact on data protection requirements globally.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Essentially, this law impacts all writers if they have email newsletter lists.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I asked my newsletter service provider, GetResponse<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I was wondering what GETRESPONSE is doing for The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).<\/p>\n

To be in line with the new General Data Protection Regulation which shall\u00a0<\/strong>come into effect on\u00a0May 25, 2018<\/span><\/span>, do I need to confirm an opt-in with my\u00a0<\/strong>subscribers again?<\/strong><\/p>\n

They replied:<\/p>\n

Essentially what you must do to comply is: Proof<\/strong>. Provide\u00a0<\/strong>trackable, recorded proof that everyone on your existing\u00a0<\/strong>email list has opted in.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you have this proof already, you do not need to do anything, if you do not — I recommend a\u00a0reconfirmation campaign that would collect the needed\u00a0details.<\/p>\n

WHY IT MATTERS<\/h2>\n

Unlike the previous European Union law on data protection, this new law has teeth: financial penalties.<\/a><\/p>\n

“GDPR has increased penalties for non-compliance.”

NOW WHAT?<\/h3>\n

STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO BE COMPLIANT OF THIS NEW LAW<\/h2>\n

1. Make sure your email service provider is compliant. Feel free to email them the question I asked mine.
\n2. Don’t add people to your list without their permission.
\n3. Make it easy for people to unsubscribe.<\/p>\n
