My travel goals vary only in the distribution and destination not the desire.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, vision and journaling are connected. I looked up <em>vision<\/em> in my online copy of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> OED. (Oxford English Dictionary)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Yes, there is probably an even more through definition from a more complete OED, but I don\u2019t have the money for one. You are on your own.)<\/p>\n<h3>Vision: A distinct or vivid mental image or concept (OED)<\/h3>\n<h3>And&#8230;<\/h3>\n<h3>Vision: An excursion into the imagination (OED again)<\/h3>\n<p>In a journal or more specifically, a travel journal, vision is obviously what we see and subsequently, what we record. But that concept begs the question because everything we see is filtered through our eyes, brains, and our bias.<\/p>\n<p>Our mental and emotion state is reflected in what we write, how we write, and even what we see before us.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the bad news.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that this filtering makes everything we see unique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Journaling is like a<\/strong> <strong>snapshot,<\/strong> like a quick Instagram download.<\/p>\n<p>In both forms, Instagram is called short blogging and is all about right now.<\/p>\n<p>OED aside, think of the metaphors the work and idea of seeing engenders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you see?<\/li>\n<li>Do you see it my way?<\/li>\n<li>Can you see me now?<\/li>\n<li>Do you see badly, poorly, clearly now?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A classic example is the day we revisit our childhood home. From our taller perspective, the old home looks different.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Of course, sometimes the revisited place IS different. Enter, travel.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagradafamilia.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"http:\/\/www.sagradafamilia.org\/en\/ noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18530 size-medium\" title=\"Sagrada Familia\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screenshot-2018-03-01-14.00.16-300x133.png\" alt=\"Sagrada Familia\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screenshot-2018-03-01-14.00.16-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screenshot-2018-03-01-14.00.16-768x341.png 768w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screenshot-2018-03-01-14.00.16.png 821w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I journaled about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagradafamilia.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sagrada Familia<\/a>, the crazy magnificence of the basilica, the architect\u2019s vision, the sunlight cascading through the stain glass &#8212; a later addition to the original Gaudi \u201cvision\u201d but no less effective.<\/p>\n<p>My mother couldn\u2019t get over the site and the cathedral, but was puzzled she didn\u2019t remember it from the first time she traveled with Dad through Europe on, <em>thank you<\/em>, five dollars a day. Back when Frommers was all about students and savings.<\/p>\n<p>I looked it up, thank you Google and thank you Spanish Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently 1959 Spain, still under Franco, was a different experience than 2016 Spain.<\/p>\n<p>I reassured Mom that she was not losing her mind. Under the communist regime, the basilica had been shuttered, construction, and discontinued. It didn&#8217;t re-open until 1962.<\/p>\n<p>And because I\u2019m a snotty child, I said brightly, \u201cAnd here we are!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Fast forward to the Alhambra for another time continuum shift.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alhambradegranada.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"https:\/\/www.alhambradegranada.org\/en\/ noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18532 size-medium\" title=\"Alhambra de Granada, Spain\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screenshot-2018-03-01-14.25.54-300x118.png\" alt=\"Alhambra de Granada, Spain\" width=\"300\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screenshot-2018-03-01-14.25.54-300x118.png 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screenshot-2018-03-01-14.25.54-768x303.png 768w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screenshot-2018-03-01-14.25.54.png 918w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we were organized through the halls, rooms, and gardens of the castle, mom recalled that there wasn\u2019t much organization when she and Dad wandered through.<\/p>\n<p>It was hot (she remembered Spain as incredibly hot), and she was so thirsty (at a time when not only didn\u2019t American tourists not walk around clutching their ubiquitous water bottles, it was a time before many American tourists marched en-mass through Europe at all) that she drank from the lion fountain.<\/p>\n<p>Really. Drank. From an ancient fountain, in a foreign country. She figured she would certainly die of thirst now weighed against the possibility of dying later of some mysterious bug. She drank.<\/p>\n<h2>Turns out she did get sick, but it was me, the initial nine months.<\/h2>\n<p>As mom reminisced about sketchy water sources, I eyed the fountain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alhambradegranada.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"https:\/\/www.alhambradegranada.org\/en\/ noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18533 size-medium alignright\" title=\"The Alhambra Fountain\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/myrtle-court-454276_640-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Alhambra Fountain\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/myrtle-court-454276_640-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/myrtle-court-454276_640-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/myrtle-court-454276_640.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>It stood in the middle of in an open sun baked courtyard. The lions still dribbled water, but it was roped off and carefully monitored by humorless guards.<\/p>\n<p>There would be no spontaneous, irresponsible drinking today.<\/p>\n<p>We only had a few moments to glance at it as we were guided from the shaded corridor to look at another tiled room.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I carried a water bottle.<\/p>\n<h2>The Alhambra<\/h2>\n<p>The secret is here<br \/>\nCloser come closer we have<br \/>\nApples pomegranates<br \/>\nSee eat this ripe orange and<br \/>\nRemain in paradise up to the 6th<br \/>\nOr yes 7th level<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s in this room see<\/p>\n<p>Paradise behind<br \/>\nthick walls<br \/>\nWe protect and cultivate<br \/>\nCareful roses<br \/>\nA man replaces<br \/>\nThe thorns every summer evening<\/p>\n<p>The outside wall, the inside wall and<br \/>\nBetween, yes, there is nothing<br \/>\nBetter protection yes? No one cares<br \/>\nWhat doesn&#8217;t grow between the walls<\/p>\n<p>Understand yes,<br \/>\nwhat is empty<br \/>\nso attractive<br \/>\nso terrible.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s mental vision added to what I was seeing as we bussed through Spain, because of her, I saw things differently. My sight and vision was enhanced, as were my memories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In your journal you can describe exactly what you see, then write about what you think you see. <\/strong>Make notes about what you want to see.<\/p>\n<p>It can be like a vision board: a combination of reality layered over with imagination.
