I thought I knew my WHY. In \" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Knowing your <em>why<\/em> is an important first step in figuring out how to achieve the goals that excite you and create a life you enjoy living (versus merely surviving!).<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, only when you know your &#8220;why&#8221; will you find the courage to take the risks needed to get ahead, stay motivated when the chips are down, and move your life onto an entirely new, more challenging, and more rewarding trajectory.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Simon Sinek&#8217;s book,<strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2BwbbHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Start with Why<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, most of us know our WHAT and our HOW, but few people ever get the WHY. He made a creative chart he calls &#8220;The Golden Circle,&#8221; the WHY being the center and most desirable step.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cThe Golden Circle\u201d shows the circles of What, How, and the Why.<\/h2>\n<p>Sinek explains it this way:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThe outer section of the Golden Circle\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/carol-m-e1517941169667.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18352 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/carol-m-e1517941169667.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a><strong>WHAT<\/strong>\u2014 corresponds to the outer section of the brain\u2014the neocortex. This is the part of the brain responsible for rational and analytical thought. It helps us understand facts and figures, features and benefits. The neocortex is also responsible for language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The middle two sections of the Golden Circle\u2014the <strong>WHY<\/strong> and <strong>HOW<\/strong>\u2014correspond to the middle section of the brain, the limbic system. This is the part of the brain responsible for all our behavior and decision making. It\u2019s also responsible for all our feelings, like trust and loyalty. But unlike the neocortex, the limbic system has no capacity for language. This is where \u2018gut feelings\u2019 come from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sinek explains that the WHY comes from the limbic brain, like the center circle in the diagram. It\u2019s responsible for feelings \u2013 not our heart or our gut. This is the biological place from which our WHY sprouts from.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sinek:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<strong>WHY<\/strong> goes much deeper to understanding what motivates and inspires us. <a href=\"https:\/\/ctt.ec\/B4Gdv\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/clicktotweet.com\/img\/bg-twitter.png\" alt=\"Tweet: \" \/><\/a> It is the purpose, cause, or belief that drives every organization and every person&#8217;s individual career.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the case of being a writer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do we write?<\/li>\n<li>Why do we get out of bed in the morning?<\/li>\n<li>And why should anyone care?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What does it look like when you know \u201cYour Why\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p>Sinek uses two examples of a sales pitch to paper company clients to show the beauty of knowing a company\u2019s WHY.<\/p>\n<p>Think of this in terms of telling people about your stories and books.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which sounds like the pitch you&#8217;d respond to?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Popular pitch \u2013 <em>what<\/em> and <em>how<\/em>:<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We sell paper. We offer the highest quality product at the best possible price. Lower than any of our competitors. Wanna buy some?<\/p>\n<h2>Second pitch. Beginning with the company&#8217;s <em>WHY<\/em>:<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>What good is an idea if it can&#8217;t be shared?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Our company was founded to help spread ideas. The more ideas that are shared, the greater the likelihood those ideas will have an impact in the world. There are many ways to share ideas; one is the written word. That&#8217;s where we come in. We make paper for those words. We make paper for big ideas. Wanna buy some?<\/p>\n<h2>Let&#8217;s Review&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>The first is based on facts and figures while the second is a deeper more emotionally engaging form which connects to customers&#8217; personal values.<\/p>\n<p>I do know that when I feel a company or an author really has my best interests at heart, or speaks to me from the place where I feel good, I\u2019m more than likely to buy the product or the book.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What resonates with you about someone who really knows their WHY?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Life coach, best selling author and personal development guru <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tonyrobbins.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony Robbins<\/a> says that if &#8220;you have a big enough &#8216;why&#8217; then the &#8216;how&#8217; is easy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What he means by this is that if you are highly motivated, inspired, or driven to achieve something, figuring out how to accomplish your goal is a lot easier.<\/p>\n<h1>How do we discover or cultivate our WHY?<\/h1>\n<p>In the article, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/determine-your-why-2918520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9 Things &#8211; Determine Your &#8220;Why<\/a><\/strong><\/span>,&#8221; by Thomas Phelps, Thomas suggests that finding your WHY begins with clarity:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cBefore you begin on your path towards greater success in your sales career, you need to be crystal clear on why you want to enjoy greater success in your sales career. In fact, you need to get to the emotional point when being successful stops being a want and becomes a must!<\/p>\n<h2>Ask These Questions<\/h2>\n<p>Phelps recommends these <strong>questions<\/strong> to develop your clear &#8220;why.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What will I have in my life once I achieve my goal?<\/li>\n<li>How much better will my life be once I hit my target?<\/li>\n<li>What will I lose out on if I fail or give up?<\/li>\n<li>What areas of my life will be improved?<\/li>\n<li>What are the top 3 things that I will gain once I reach my goal?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Phelps says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Your list of questions may be different.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Your list may be much longer, or you may only need one question to create a &#8220;why\u2019&#8221; so big and inspirational that your success is just a matter of time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do whatever it takes to get you to the point where failure is simply not an option, and your desire to achieve success is so powerful that it gets you up in the morning and keeps you working towards your goal deep into the night.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>First Steps<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WFZ_The-first-thing-to-remember-is-that-finding-your-Why-is-a-discovery_Docker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18385\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WFZ_The-first-thing-to-remember-is-that-finding-your-Why-is-a-discovery_Docker-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WFZ_The-first-thing-to-remember-is-that-finding-your-Why-is-a-discovery_Docker-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WFZ_The-first-thing-to-remember-is-that-finding-your-Why-is-a-discovery_Docker-160x160.jpg 160w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WFZ_The-first-thing-to-remember-is-that-finding-your-Why-is-a-discovery_Docker-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WFZ_The-first-thing-to-remember-is-that-finding-your-Why-is-a-discovery_Docker.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also like the discussion of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/danschawbel\/2017\/09\/05\/david-mead-and-peter-docker-how-to-find-your-why\/#1ca8117212cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHY<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on Dan Schawbel\u2019s site. He interviews David Mead and Peter Docker, who helped Simon Sinek write his book, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2Cd1z4U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finding Your Why<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Schawbel asks Docker:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong> \u201cWhat are the first steps to finding your \u2018why\u2019 and how do you make it unique to you and your career\/life?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Docker replies:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cThe first thing to remember is that finding your Why is a <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">discovery<\/span>.<\/strong> It\u2019s not about creating anything. <strong>The <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">discovery process<\/span> starts with exploring the times in our lives when we felt particularly fulfilled, excited or inspired.<\/strong> They don\u2019t need to be big events \u2013 often the seemingly trivial memory may have biggest significance for us. What they do need to be is specific.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Specifics<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Specific moments in time trigger emotions.<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s those emotions that are usually linked to our values in life.<\/p>\n<p>When we recount several of these specific stories, common themes emerge and point to our <strong>Why<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Because our Why comes from our past experiences, everyone\u2019s Why is unique.<\/h3>\n<p>We may feel someone else\u2019s Why is similar, but it\u2019s the stories behind the Why that make each unique and authentic.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m getting the feeling I should do some digging into my past \u2013- note the best times when things in my life were clicking on all eight cylinders.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when I started writing full time. A college professor told me I had a gift and needed to share my writing. It was the first time in my life I&#8217;d received such a compliment. I was so jazzed, so \u201cin the zone,\u201d that I wrote six manuscripts in less than six months.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown to me, those feelings of exhilaration kept me writing for hours each day was because I&#8217;d found my WHY.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WFZ_Don\u2019t-ask-yourself-what-the-world-needs_Thurman.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18383 size-medium\" title=\"\u201cDon\u2019t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive, then go do that. What makes you come alive?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The word <em>inspire<\/em> comes from the Latin, meaning \u201cto breathe life into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Accordingly, when you are working toward things that inspire you, it literally makes you feel more alive&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It\u2019s about connecting with what you\u2019re passionate about, knowing that when you focus your attention on endeavors that put a fire in your belly, y<strong>ou grow your impact and influence in ways that nothing else can.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. What are your innate strengths?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2H6yhbH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Element<\/a>, Sir Ken Robinson says that our element is the point at which natural talent and skill meets personal passion. When people are in their element they are not only more productive, but they add value and enjoy more personal and professional fulfillment\u2026 For a free strengths survey visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viame.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.viame.org\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As civil rights leader <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Howard_Thurman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Howard Thurman<\/a> once wrote, <strong>\u201cDon&#8217;t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive, then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Indeed they do.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Where do you add the greatest value?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Doing work that you\u2019re good at, but which you loathe, is not a pathway to fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">That said, knowing your greatest strengths and where you can add the most value\u2014through the application of your education, skills, knowledge and experience\u2014can help you focus on the opportunities, roles and career paths where you are most likely to succeed and therefore find the greatest sense of accomplishment and contribution.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. How will you measure your life?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">People who don\u2019t stand for something, can easily fall for anything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Deciding how you want to measure your life means taking a stand for something and then living your life in alignment with it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">No matter what your job, you can draw meaning from it, and find greater purpose through how you do what you do&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you don\u2019t think you\u2019re the kind of person you\u2019d want to work with, then consider that it may not be because of the job you do each day, but your attitude toward it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Knowing your purpose may compel you to take on challenges that will stretch you as much as they inspire you. Just as a boat under power can handle any size wave if perpendicular to it, when you\u2019re powered by a clear purpose, there is little you cannot do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve given you a lot of quotes and examples and steps to claiming your WHY.<\/p>\n<p>The subject is overwhelming and deep.<\/p>\n<p>Whichever way you choose to re-examine or re-connect with your WHY, maybe you\u2019ll discover a new path and a new way of thinking and feeling.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you&#8217;ll find a clear filter to make good choices in your life &#8212; not just at work or with your writing &#8212; but something that will help build on who you are and when your\u2019re at our best, as Margie says.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you learn along the way, you can pass on to others in your books and in your personal lives.<\/p>\n<p>One last parting quote from Margie.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhatever we choose to do, moving toward something (e.g, a situation in which we can thrive) is always better than moving away from something.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wish you determination and resolution as you seek to discover your WHY.
