\"\"<\/a> The best snappy dialogue that comes to my mind is from the movies of the 30\u2019s and 40\u2019s, think Kathryn Hepburn, and Cary Grant. These are the two actors who I think of as the King and Queen of snappy dialogue.<\/p>\n

Cary Grant example: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Eva Marie Saint\u00a0(Eve Kendall): I tipped the steward five dollars to seat you here if you should come in.<\/p>\n

Cary Grant\u00a0(Roger Thornhill): Is that a proposition?<\/p>\n

Eva Marie Saint\u00a0(Eve): I never discuss love on an empty stomach.<\/p>\n

Cary Grant\u00a0(Roger): You’ve already eaten!<\/p>\n

Eva Marie Saint\u00a0(Eve): But you haven’t.<\/p>\n

Snappy dialogue isn\u2019t clunky, it flows. There a teasing quality to it and you can\u2019t help a grin when it goes just right.<\/p>\n

Kathryn Hepburn\u2019s example:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Howard Hughes: [doesn’t hear what Kate says] Excuse me?<\/p>\n

Katharine Hepburn: Well, if you’re deaf, you must own up to it. Get a hearing aid, or see my father. He’s an urologist, but it’s all tied up inside the\u00a0body, don’t you find?<\/p>\n

Howard Hughes: Mmm.<\/p>\n

Katharine Hepburn: Me, I keep healthy. I take 7 showers\u00a0a day to keep clean, also because I’m so vulgarly referred to as “outdoors-y.” Well, I’m not “outdoors-y,” I’m athletic. I sweat! There it is, now we both know the sordid truth: I sweat, and you’re deaf. Aren’t we a fine pair of misfits?<\/p>\n

~*~<\/p>\n

I think some of my best scenes in my book, Windswept Shores<\/em>, where the dialogue just flows are the ones where the hero teases the heroine.<\/p>\n

Windswept Shores<\/em>\u2019 example:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had me a net, I could catch some of those fishies for dinner.\u201d Seth paddled water while he gazed into the pool.
\n\u201cDon\u2019t you have a net on the boat?\u201d
\n\u201cWe usually use fishing poles.\u201d
\n\u201cNo, I mean to net the fish after you reel them in.\u201d She swam over to him.
\n\u201cI don\u2019t reckon you know the difference between fresh and salt water fishing, mate.\u201d
\n\u201cOkay, what\u2019s the difference?\u201d She splashed water just in front of him.
\nHis smile twisted to the side. \u201cWhen you fish in the sea, they’re a mite bigger.\u201d
\n\u201cOkay, smarty pants, how do you get the fish into the boat?\u201d
\n\u201cYou use a big stick with a hook to pull them in.\u201d
\n\u201cOh, I think I did see that somewhere.\u201d
\n\u201cProbably, you accidentally lit on it when ya flipped through the channels on the box.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The best way to learn snappy dialogue is to listen to it.<\/p>\n

Watch those wonderful films of the 30\u2019s and 40\u2019s, or anything that has snappy banter.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re lucky enough to know people who pick and tease in the same manner, then listen to their conversations. And it might just make you smile.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all in the ear. And it can be learned.<\/p>\n

Windswept Shores<\/em>\u2019 example (it\u2019s not all one sided, Megan gets her turn):<\/p>\n

Walking back to the Dinki-Di, Seth complained with a glance at her bikini, \u201cWhy did you put your cossie back on?\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m not comfortable naked,\u201d she explained. \u201cWhat if someone showed up while I\u2019m undressed?\u201d<\/p>\n

He gazed around, then back down at her. \u201cMegz, no one is here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, but you showed up not once, but twice, didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUm, yeah,\u201d Seth muttered with a slight frown.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan\u2019t argue with that, can you?\u201d She grinned. I love winning an argument.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
