Please welcome author and book coach in-training\u00a0Carol Malone<\/a>. Today she\u2019s sharing her article about why we should write subtext into our stories and how. “What Are You Trying To Say?”\u00a0Enjoy!<\/em><\/p>\n

During a romance novel critiquing session,<\/strong> one of my co-author\u2019s comment to me was, \u201cYou need more subtext in your dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now I had heard the word \u201csubtext,\u201d but I\u2019d never consciously worked \u201csubtext\u201d into my writing. Or so I thought.<\/p>\n

So, I asked:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is subtext?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I Googled \u201csubtext, and was amazed. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Sue Weems on The Write Practice.com<\/em><\/a><\/strong> said:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cSubtext is the message sent beneath the words we say. It can be carried by nonverbal cues, such as eye-rolls or silence, but it\u2019s strongest when the spoken words are confounded, complicated, or subverted by the message implied. We sometimes call this ‘reading between the lines\u2026’ “<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

At <\/strong>www.writingclasses.com<\/strong><\/a> an article titled \u201cIn Dialogue, what is subtext?\u201d the author states,<\/p>\n

\u201cSubtext is the meaning beneath the dialogue; what the speaker really means, even though he\u2019s not saying it directly.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Cris Freese explained subtext in her article<\/strong> \u201cCreating Setting and Subtext in Your Fiction<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cSubtext is not what we say in our story but how<\/em> we say it. It\u2019s the secondary message we give our readers. The ones we want them to understand without telling them directly. Subtext adds depth and complexity. It builds an experience that remains in the readers\u2019 awareness.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A message sent between two people, or maybe more, the hidden message<\/strong> beneath the words our characters say.<\/p>\n

I get the meaning of the hidden or mixed messages.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s like in the Godfather<\/em>, when Don Corleone tells his cry-baby, no-account actor godson, Johnny Fontane, \u201cI\u2019ll make him an offer he can\u2019t refuse,\u201d so he can get a movie part. We know right away the poor old producer is in for a nasty treat.<\/p>\n

Voil\u00e0\u00a0<\/em>! Subtext.<\/p>\n

I know many of us have used that phrase with our children or others we wanted to highly motivate. Only we meant we\u2019d restrict TV viewing or the use of the car, not murdering someone\u2019s prized race horse.<\/p>\n

Subtext. The meaning beneath the words.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Okay, if this subtext is reading between the lines for the reader, how does the writer write between the lines dialogue?<\/p>\n

When I started to think about the use of subtext,<\/strong> I didn\u2019t have to go much further than my own relationship with my husband.<\/p>\n

My husband wanted something. He said to me:<\/p>\n

\u201cIs your Amazon prime account still good?\u201d he asked staring at his computer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. I just signed up for movie prime,\u201d I said and continued typing on my computer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMovies, great. Is my account still active?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow should I know?\u201d I said. \u201cJust check under \u2018My Account\u2019 on your homepage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt still pays for free shipping?\u201d Folded his arms, his tone annoyed.<\/p>\n

I shook my head, annoyance swelling. \u201cOf course. Why wouldn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just asking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you asking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a bit more back and forth, I finally drug out of him the fact that he wanted to buy a book and he\u2019d canceled his Amazon prime account. Sometimes we waste a lot of time with subtext, but it does make for lively conversations.<\/p>\n

How can we write subtext into our novels?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In her article \u201c5 Techniques for Adding Subtext to your Story<\/a>,\u201d<\/strong> Becca Puglisi of Thesaurus fame offered five techniques to aid us in incorporating subtext into our stories.<\/p>\n

Becca\u2019s techniques:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Give you character an objective:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We all have an objective, whether we realize it or not \u2013- \u201cbig picture\u201d objectives (buying a house) and \u201csmall picture\u201d objectives (going to the bathroom). Your character should have something that drives them. The only thing that will drive them is an objective -\u2013 a goal. Furthermore, having a goal will automatically add subtext to everything they say.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Give your character an action:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Now that the character has a goal, you have to give them the means by which they can achieve that goal.\u00a0Try not having your character attempt to achieve his\/her goal by deliberately asking for it. Instead, let them use their body language, or their tone of voice, to show what they want.<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Make your characters talk in gibberish:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        It might sound strange, but when you replace all your character\u2019s dialogue with gibberish, the subtext is revealed, or at least hinted at. On the other hand, if you did a great job of developing the subtext of the story, then your reader should have a general idea of what\u2019s going on in the scene — even when the characters are talking nonsense.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Give your character a secret:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          When you give a character a secret, it instantly makes them more interesting.<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Give a character a secret about another character:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            What is more tantalizing than a character with a secret?\u00a0A character who knows another character\u2019s<\/em> secret.\u00a0When you put those two characters together in a room it makes for a very fascinating scene — chock full of delicious, delicious subtext.\u00a0Yum!<\/p>\n

            Nine steps to writing good dialogue with subtext:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

            I found another great list of subtext writing steps from Charles Harris’ article \u201c9 steps to writing dialogue with rich subtext<\/a>.” See if these steps give you more insight in subtext.<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Subtext is a muscle<\/strong>, like any other writing skill. You develop it by working it. At first it may seem hard but after putting in the hours you\u2019ll find you start to develop an instinct. You\u2019ll know when a line is \u201con the nose\u201d and needs to be made more subtle and oblique. Be patient, work hard and the muscle will grow stronger.<\/li>\n
            2. First write the \u201ctext.\u201d<\/strong> Talking to other writers, I found we all did the same. Our first drafts are full of dialogue that is unsubtle and too direct.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              She starts to walk away.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

              MIKE
              \nI don\u2019t want you to go just yet.<\/p>\n

              CLAIRE
              \nI can stay a little longer.<\/p>\n

              MIKE
              \nLet\u2019s talk.<\/p>\n

              \n

              Then when we redraft we take all those lines and find ways of hiding those thoughts by having our characters talk (overtly) of other things.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

              She starts to walk away.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

              MIKE
              \nClaire?<\/p>\n

              CLAIRE
              \nHmm\u2026<\/p>\n

              MIKE<\/p>\n

              (holds up crossword)
              \nYou wouldn\u2019t happen to know what language they speak in India, do you?<\/p>\n

              (From Someone to Watch Over Me<\/a><\/em>)<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. Listen to how real people talk.<\/strong> There\u2019s nothing like a good dose of reality. Listen to the dialogue that people create\u00a0naturally and ask yourself what they are really thinking. Then ask yourself how you know.<\/li>\n
              2. Read, read, read.<\/strong> Do some detective work. Spy on how the great novelists, short story writers, screenwriters and playwrights do it. Then steal as much as you can get away with.<\/li>\n
              3. Try this exercise.<\/strong> Create two random characters and give them something they mustn\u2019t mention. Say, two prisoners are waiting to be hanged. They talk of anything but that — the weather, their last meal, a mouse in the cell. See how every word, every pause, can be filled with unspoken meaning.<\/li>\n
              4. Know your characters inside-out.<\/strong> One reason that it\u2019s difficult to write subtext on the first draft is that you don\u2019t yet know the characters well enough. Ibsen used to say, about writing plays, that in the first draft your characters are strangers. In the second draft they are friends, and by the third they are close family.<\/li>\n
              5. Practise, practise, practise.<\/strong> Keep a notebook with you always and jot down ideas for lines that come to you, lines that reveal without saying. When you\u2019re waiting for a train or walking along the street, play with dialogue in your head. Keep exercising that muscle.<\/li>\n
              6. Cut, cut, cut.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Mary toys with her food. She looks up at Frank.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

                MARY
                \nDo you love me?<\/p>\n

                FRANK
                \nI have to admit that I don\u2019t really love you very much.<\/p>\n

                MARY
                \nThat makes me feel very unhappy, but I\u2019ll just have to get on with it, even though my heart is breaking.<\/p>\n

                It\u2019s fascinating how much can be revealed by a question that is left hanging after you\u2019ve cut the answer. Or an answer given to a question that\u2019s not been asked. Find creative ways for your characters to change the subject, or the reverse: return to an old subject.<\/p>\n

                Mary toys with her food. She looks up at Frank.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

                MARY
                \nDo you love me?<\/p>\n

                Frank says nothing but stares at his plate.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

                MARY
                \nI\u2019ll get the dessert, then. It\u2019s trifle. Your favourite.<\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. And finally, in writing as in real life, sometimes emotions are running so high that people do actually say what they are really thinking.<\/strong> They blurt out their love, their fear, their hope. But even then, there is almost always a subtext beneath their directness. Even as your character says, \u201cI love you\u201d there\u2019s still something that\u2019s not being said.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  Many more writing gurus have spoken to this topic of how to write brilliant subtext and show impactful subtext through body language. I don\u2019t pretend to understand it complete at this point.<\/p>\n

                  Like one guru suggested, practice, practice, practice, and then listen to people talk, to their conversations and listen and watch for the subtle cues that the person is not saying what they mean. Examine your own conversations. What do you have to hide or what are you trying NOT to say?<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  I\u2019m going to end my discussion about subtext with my favorite movie, and really fascinating example of movie subtext. I\u2019d be interested to know what you think about this discussion. Please leave me a comment with your thoughts.<\/p>\n

                  MARK ZUCKERBERG: Did you know there are more people with genius IQ\u2019s living in China than there are people of any kind living in the United States?<\/p>\n

                  ERICA (Mark\u2019s date): That can\u2019t be true.<\/p>\n

                  MARK: It is true.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: What would account for that?<\/p>\n

                  MARK: Well first of all, a lot of people live in China. But here\u2019s my question: How do you distinguish yourself in a population of people who all got 1,600 on their SAT\u2019s?<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: I didn\u2019t know they take SAT\u2019s in China.<\/p>\n

                  MARK: I wasn\u2019t talking about China anymore, I was talking about here.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: You got 1600?<\/p>\n

                  MARK: You can sing in an A Capella<\/em> group.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: Does that mean that you actually got nothing wrong?<\/p>\n

                  MARK: Or you row crew or you invent a $25 PC.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: Or you get into a final club\u2026<\/p>\n

                  MARK: Or you get into a final club, exactly.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: I like guys who row crew.<\/p>\n

                  MARK: (beat) Well, I can\u2019t do that. And yes, it means I got nothing wrong on that test.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: Have you ever tried?<\/p>\n

                  MARK: I\u2019m trying now.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: To row crew?<\/p>\n

                  MARK: To get into a final club. To row crew? No. Are you, like\u2014whatever\u2014crazy?<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: Sometimes, Mark\u2014seriously\u2014you say two things at once and I\u2019m not sure which on we\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n

                  MARK: But you\u2019ve seen guys who row crew, right?<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: No.<\/p>\n

                  MARK: Okay, well they\u2019re bigger than me. They\u2019re world class athletes. And a second ago you said you like guys who row crew so I assumed you\u2019d met one.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: I guess I meant I like the idea of it. The way a girl likes cowboys.<\/p>\n

                  MARK: The Phoenix is good.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: This is a new topic.<\/p>\n

                  MARK: It\u2019s the same topic.<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: We\u2019re still talking about the final clubs?<\/p>\n

                  MARK: Would you rather talk about something else?<\/p>\n

                  ERICA: No, it\u2019s just that since the beginning of the conversation about finals clubs, I think I may have had a birthday.<\/p>\n
