And there\u2019s a problem with that.<\/p>\n<p>Readers don\u2019t usually like them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Readers often say that that they skip those scenes,<\/strong> not because they\u2019re squeamish or puritanical about sex. They skip the sex scenes because they\u2019re boring. Nothing changes in the plot or character development. Nothing happens.<\/p>\n<p>But sex doesn\u2019t have to be like that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get Your Groove On<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it: in real life, sex does not always necessarily move the earth or have profound implications. But fiction has to be better than real life. You wouldn\u2019t write a scene where the protagonist goes for a haircut and then goes home. Something has to happen along the way. Something has to change.<\/p>\n<p>Your sex scenes must do the same. Whatever happens between those two (or more) people must change themselves or change the action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want, Need, and Fear<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve heard of goal, motivation, and conflict for developing the structure of your novel. To create your characters\u2019 emotions, try thinking in terms of what they want, need, and fear.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Want<\/strong> is immediate, concrete, and urgent. It\u2019s something the character pursues to cope with the Fear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Fear<\/strong> is something universal. However, because the Want doesn\u2019t actually address the Fear, getting the Want is a temporary solution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Need<\/strong> is the character\u2019s higher self. Initially the character isn\u2019t even aware of the Need because it\u2019s buried, smothered by Fear. Yet the Need must be embraced to move past Fear and grow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u2019s your character arc!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Couple\u2019s Dilemma<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So how does this work? Here\u2019s a simple example. Let\u2019s say you\u2019re writing a story that features a woman who thinks she\u2019s overweight. Her Want could be to lose thirty pounds. Her Fear is that if she doesn\u2019t lose weight, she\u2019ll be forever unloved and lonely. Her Need is to accept herself for who she is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So if you want to inject some conflict in your sex scene,<\/strong> choose a hero who likes our heroine just the way she is. Maybe the hero wants to make love with the lights on because he wants to see her. However your heroine, acting from her Fear, insists on darkness, because light makes her feel awkward and unattractive.<\/p>\n<p>So, even if they sex, there\u2019s both external and internal tension. Resolving everyone\u2019s Wants, Needs, and Fears\u2014in sex scenes as well as action scenes\u2014can arc through the entire book.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or perhaps your hero prefers (Wants) to work alone on the project,<\/strong> because he believes (Fears) that his teammates aren\u2019t good enough to contribute anything meaningful\u2014or perhaps they\u2019ll be too good and will make him look bad. For the success of the project, he Needs to learn the give and take of teamwork. Those same characteristics will follow him into the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make It Count<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Challenge yourself to make the sex scene matter, not only to the characters but to the plot. Interweave the emotions that the characters feel with the sex act itself. Your characters shouldn\u2019t come out of any sex scene the same person as they were going in. The change can be subtle, but it should be there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your sex scenes are an opportunity to explore your characters at their most vulnerable.<\/strong> Use them as you would any other scene to advance your plot and character development.
