These are the basics on which you should always build your plot and characters. Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does your character want something? Make sure s\/he always has a goal.<\/li>\n<li>Why does s\/he want it? Make that motivation a life-or-death need. It doesn\u2019t literally have to be life or death\u2014it just has to feel that way for your character.<\/li>\n<li>Is your character in conflict? It\u2019s time to raise the stakes. If your character isn\u2019t in conflict, you\u2019re in trouble.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>But knowing that you need strong goals<\/strong>, motivations, and conflicts for your characters doesn\u2019t always get the job done for you, the writer. You need to increase tension, suspense, emotions, and obstacles for your characters. Sometimes you can do that by reorganizing the material you already have, ordering the scenes with escalating tension more logically.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you\u2019re just stuck? You don\u2019t know what happens next? What does this character, who has a strong goal, motivation, and conflict, do <em>in the next moment<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2aZRGgH\" target=\"_blank\">Raymond Carver<\/a> famously said that when he wrote himself into a corner,<\/strong> he had a man come through a door with a gun in his hand. One of my teachers once said that when she got stuck, she wrote a dog into the story. Sometimes you just need to goose the action a little bit to get you over the hump. Ask yourself, What if? And then write that.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some suggestions that, depending on your story, might help stimulate your creative juices to get you through the sagging middle. What if:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A long-lost relative comes to town.<\/li>\n<li>The circus (literal or metaphorical) comes to town.<\/li>\n<li>The ex comes back to town<\/li>\n<li>Your character gets a communication from the blue\u2014letter, phone call, text, or email\u2014with good news\/bad news.<\/li>\n<li>Your character gets lost and winds up someplace more interesting\/boring\/frightening.<\/li>\n<li>Your character hears a cry\/scream\/laugh\/crash.<\/li>\n<li>Your character hears music.<\/li>\n<li>The police\/firefighters\/EMTs arrive.<\/li>\n<li>The Girl Scout cookies arrive.<\/li>\n<li>The Girl Scout cookies are tainted.<\/li>\n<li>The Chinese food is tainted.<\/li>\n<li>Your character finds a (literal or metaphorical) snake.<\/li>\n<li>Your character wins the lottery.<\/li>\n<li>Someone dies.<\/li>\n<li>Someone is hacked.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Of course, these are just suggestions for stimulating your thinking.<\/strong> Not all of these options will fit into any story\u2014in fact, maybe none of them will fit into any story. The goal is to brainstorm ideas until something sparks.<\/p>\n<p>However, don\u2019t go too far out on a limb. Although accepting all ideas in a brainstorming session is good, you want to find a spark that fits your story and reveals something about your character or advances the plot.
